About The Position

The Utah State University Music Department invites applications for a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor in Music Therapy to contribute to the undergraduate music therapy program in the Department of Music within the Caine School of the Arts, College of Arts and Sciences. Utah State University is NASM accredited institution and hosts an AMTA-approved Academic and Clinical Music Therapy Training Program; it awards the Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy. The undergraduate music therapy program currently serves 80 students and supports one full-time faculty, one temporary instructor, one part-time clinical coordinator, and eight part-time supervisors/instructors. This is a full-time term appointment with a renewable one-year time frame beginning August 2026. Salary is nationally competitive with outstanding benefits [see http://www.usu.edu/hr ]. Candidates must possess an engaging teaching manner, strong interpersonal and clinical musicianship skills, with the ability to teach from different perspectives of theoretical orientations and approaches to music therapy. The successful candidate will assume primary responsibility for coordinating the practicum/clinical training aspects of the program, ensuring ongoing collaboration with full-time music therapy faculty members.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in music therapy or related area, with a minimum of transcripted graduate credits equivalent to 12 semester hours OR the equivalent of graduate credits in music therapy beyond the undergraduate equivalency requirements
  • Minimum of three years of full-time clinical experience in music therapy or its equivalent in part-time work.
  • Appropriate professional credential or designation in music therapy; record of continuing education in music therapy.
  • Record of continuing education relevant to teaching responsibilities.
  • Effectiveness as a music therapy clinician in at least one area of practice.
  • Suitable portfolio of research and creative activity with demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence.

  • Advanced clinical competence/expertise in at least one area of music therapy.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Program Director and music therapy full-time and adjunct faculty in determining student placements in field training experiences each semester and assigning respective field supervisors.
  • Assume full responsibility for content development and instruction related to the weekly Practicum Seminar Class.
  • Maintain ongoing relationships with existing practicum placement sites within the community and establish new sites and clinical training opportunities for music therapy majors.
  • Teach undergraduate courses within the music therapy curriculum as needed, which may include functional music skills and introductory courses.
  • Assist in ongoing evaluations of student interpersonal and pre-professional skills to determine readiness for clinical field experiences/practicum and internship.
  • Assist with yearly auditions to evaluate students applying for admission to the music therapy program.
  • Accept additional duties reflecting institutional, departmental, and program needs.
