About The Position

The Clinical Supervisor – Outpatient provides direct leadership and operational management for the outpatient operating room staff, catheterization lab team, and procedural staff, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care through the consistent daily execution of established departmental standards and processes. The Clinical Supervisor serves as the first line of leadership for departmental operations, including quality and patient safety, staffing and workforce management, and operational flow. The Clinical Supervisor is accountable for supervision of Charges and departmental staff, supporting staff performance, addressing issues in real time, and ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures. This position executes and operationalizes departmental goals and initiatives and partners closely with the Surgical Services Manager on complex operational, workforce, or physician related matters requiring escalation beyond routine operational scope.

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited nursing program required
  • Current RN licensure in the State of Wisconsin
  • BLS certification is required upon hire
  • Must obtain ACLS and PALS certification within six (6) months of hire
  • Must possess a cell phone that interfaces with the organization’s secure messaging system

Responsibilities

  • Utilize the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to direct and oversee daily clinical care delivery within assigned areas
  • Ensure departmental staff compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements, including those set forth by state and federal agencies, as well as accrediting bodies such as The Joint Commission
  • Actively participate in and collaborate with organizational leaders during root cause analyses and/or high priority reviews, providing frontline insight and implementing corrective actions within the department
  • Implement process improvements as a result of root cause analyses, high priority reviews, or other quality initiatives
  • Utilize AORN and other resource materials to implement and operationalize quality and performance improvement programs, instructing staff and ensuring adherence to updated standards
  • Collaborate with the Infection Preventionist Registered Nurse on compliance with accreditation requirements, patient safety initiatives, and risk mitigation strategies, ensuring daily practice reflects required standards
  • Manage successful completion of quality audits and communicate results to the Surgical Services Manager, identifying operational barriers and corrective action
  • Ensure adequate equipment and stock levels in each area to support uninterrupted daily operations
  • Identify and manage defective equipment in a timely fashion, coordinating repair or replacement within approved processes
  • Provide operational input and justification for capital and supply needs to the Surgical Services Manager; monitor departmental supply utilization and identify cost-containment opportunities
  • Complete annual review of unit policies and ensure staff awareness and compliance
  • Directly manage, supervise, and develop Charges and departmental staff, including assignment of work, oversight of daily performance, and accountability for conduct and outcomes
  • Ensure adequate communication of pertinent information as it relates to hospital operations to all departmental staff through staff meetings, huddles, one-on-one meetings, and electronic communication
  • Lead departmental staff meetings, including creation of agendas and follow-up on operational action items
  • Independently conduct and manage employee performance management processes for direct reports, including annual evaluations, counseling, discipline, feedback, and development planning, escalating significant matters to the Manager as appropriate
  • Collaborate with the Human Resources Department in conducting interviews and making hiring decisions
  • Monitor training and education of staff and lead competency validation and professional development efforts to ensure operational readiness
  • Serve as the primary driver of employee engagement within the department, implementing engagement initiatives and addressing concerns in real time
  • Support the Charge in overseeing daily operations and workflow and act as back-up Charge in their absence, ensuring continuity of patient care and staffing coverage
  • Develop and manage daily and weekly staffing schedules within approved FTE and budget parameters; provide input to the Manager regarding staffing needs and operational trends
  • Manage payroll for staff members on a bi-weekly basis, ensuring accuracy and adherence to approved budgeted hours prior to Manager review and approval
  • Ensure successful and timely completion of competencies and orientation in collaboration with Preceptors and Employee Education, ensuring accountability for compliance
  • Perform quality 90-day evaluations on departmental new hires in a timely fashion
  • Manage the clinical assist and student intern onboarding experience and ongoing performance management
  • Serve as the primary operational liaison between nursing staff and providers for day-to-day procedural and workflow matters
  • Coordinate daily care delivery between nursing and medical staff to ensure seamless patient care and optimal outcomes
  • Address routine conflicts or issues that arise between nursing staff and providers in a timely and effective manner, escalating complex or recurring concerns to the Surgical Services Manager
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives with physicians by implementing agreed-upon process changes within daily operations
  • Serve on committees as designated by the Surgical Services Manager, representing frontline operational perspectives
  • Participate in the administrator on-call rotation, managing operational issues within scope and escalating organizational-level concerns appropriately
  • Perform other duties as assigned
