We are seeking a hands-on Software Engineer to design, build, and optimize highly resilient, observable, and maintainable HR technology systems in Azure. This role is deeply technical and engineering-focused, with the majority of time spent designing system components, writing code, troubleshooting production issues, and continuously improving performance and reliability. You will join the HR Technology Engineering team, responsible for modernizing and supporting key HR platforms, including Workday, UKG Dimensions, and proprietary compensation systems. The team operates in a cloud-first, product-oriented model and partners closely with architects, product owners, and engineering leadership to deliver secure, scalable, cloud-native solutions that support enterprise-wide HR functions. This role exists to accelerate the modernization of the HR technology ecosystem by migrating legacy systems into Azure, elevating engineering standards, and building robust platforms that support CarMax’s long-term HR strategy. The engineer in this role will bring strong backend expertise, deep understanding of cloud-native design, and a passion for building reliable systems with exceptional observability.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with C# in both backend and frontend development.
  • 2+ years developing and deploying solutions in Azure, utilizing services such as App Services, Functions, API Management, Cosmos DB, Service Bus, Blob Storage, and Azure DevOps.
  • Experience with cloud‑native architecture patterns: microservices, automated testing, CI/CD, and modern DevOps pipelines.
  • Strong experience designing, building, and maintaining REST APIs.
  • Solid understanding of Azure networking, identity (Azure AD), security, monitoring, and observability best practices.
  • Experience with developer-owned automated testing frameworks.
  • Comfortable using AI engineering tools such as Claude Code, OpenAI, or GitHub Copilot.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code using Bicep (preferred), ARM, or Terraform.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CarMax enterprise design patterns and architecture practices.
  • Prior exposure to HR systems such as Workday or UKG, or strong willingness and ability to learn new SaaS platforms quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Cloud Modernization & System Development Contribute to the migration of legacy HR systems into Azure cloud infrastructure.
  • Build highly resilient, compliant, and maintainable platforms with strong end-to-end observability and proactive discrepancy monitoring.
  • Design and develop scalable REST APIs and abstraction layers supporting HR Compensation, Workday, UKG Dimensions, and other platforms.
  • Work on backend services with the ability to contribute to frontend components such as dashboards and internal UI tools.
  • Engineering Excellence Write clean, reliable, maintainable code while following disciplined SDLC practices.
  • Participate in code reviews, debugging, and troubleshooting of production services.
  • Own critical system components and ensure their ongoing health and performance.
  • Adhere to and help shape enterprise architectural best practices and standards.
  • Collaboration & Leadership Partner product teams to align work with strategic HR technology goals.
  • Translate organizational strategy into clear team objectives and deliverables.
  • Share knowledge, mentor teammates, and model strong engineering habits.
  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement Research, evaluate, and introduce emerging technologies that enhance team capability and product quality.
  • Establish engineering patterns that balance innovation with cost, reliability, supportability, and security within a regulated HR environment.
  • Promote a culture of learning, iteration, and open feedback across the engineering team.
  • Participate in on-call rotation to support mission‑critical systems.
