About The Position

Help shape our commercial portfolio through smart, strategic underwriting. Hastings Insurance is seeking a Commercial Underwriter to join its Commercial Underwriting team. This role plays a key part in underwriting new and renewal business, building agent relationships, and contributing to the overall profitability and growth of our commercial book. The Commercial Underwriter is part of a supportive team that values thoughtful decision-making, accountability, and a passion for protecting what matters most to our policyholders. Location & Schedule: This is a full-time position working Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The role offers flexibility and may be performed onsite in Hastings, in a hybrid format, or fully remote. For remote arrangements, we strongly prefer candidates who reside in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, or Wisconsin, though additional states may be considered based on business needs. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Insurance, Finance, or related field preferred, or equivalent work experience.
  • Prior commercial underwriting experience at a P&C insurance carrier required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn underwriting systems.
  • A collaborative mindset and customer-focused approach to service and negotiation.
  • Willingness to travel and adapt to the needs of the assigned territory.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional designations such as AINS, AU, or CPCU are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Review, evaluate, and process commercial insurance applications in line with underwriting guidelines.
  • Balance risk selection with growth goals to support both profitability and production targets.
  • Apply sound judgment to risk assessment while staying within your level of authority.
  • Communicate regularly with agents and internal stakeholders to provide responsive, service-oriented underwriting support.
  • Stay current on product knowledge, pricing strategies, and coverage enhancements across all lines.
  • Support team initiatives and goals while servicing an assigned territory collaboratively.
  • Assist in onboarding and mentoring new underwriting staff and technicians.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and continuing education.
  • Occasionally travel to agency offices in coordination with Marketing and Loss Control teams.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.
