About The Position

This position is responsible for analyzing new and existing business with regards to acceptability, rate selection, and loss history in order to produce an Underwriting profit.

Requirements

Four-year degree from an accredited college or university.
Knowledge of basic computer applications, especially Microsoft Office Suite.
Effective interpersonal verbal skills, both face-to-face and over the phone.
Ability to plan, organize, and complete detailed work independently or in a team environment.
Valid Texas driver’s license and driving record at the time of hire which would not place the employee on probation, or disqualify the employee from Certified Fleet Operator Status, under the company Driving and Safety Policy.

Responsibilities

Examine documents to determine degree of risk from such factors as applicant financial standing, and value and condition of property.
Operate within the Underwriting Authority Letter produced and assigned by the Commercial Lines Underwriting District Manager.
Make underwriting decisions in compliance with departmental procedures, TFB guidelines, binding limitations, reinsurance restrictions, and Texas Department of Insurance regulations.
Write to field representatives, medical personnel, and others to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain company underwriting policies.
Meet in person with assigned agents and county offices to discuss commercial appetite, field questions, and create a positive working relationship
Communicate underwriting decisions to agents, applicants, and insureds.
Evaluate the possibility of losses due to catastrophe or excessive insurance.
Decrease the value of a policy when risk is substandard and specify applicable endorsements or apply rating to ensure safe profitable distribution of risks, using reference materials.
Review company records to determine amount of insurance in force on single risk or group of closely related risks.
Authorize reinsurance of policy when risk is high.
Assist in training the Underwriter Trainee.
Participate in TFB-administered self-improvement courses.
Report any special problem(s) involving agency force, work flow delay of two or more days, and correspondence from the Texas Department of Insurance and other regulatory agencies to the assigned Commercial Lines Underwriting District Manager.
Report, in writing, to the assigned Commercial Lines Underwriting District Manager any recommended changes in TFB guidelines and procedures.
Participate in any special projects or research activities as assigned.
Communicate with employees of other departments regarding transactions related to Underwriting.
Comply with the Certified Fleet Operator requirements of the Company Driving and Safety Policy.
Other duties as assigned.
