About The Position

At VCU, sustainability matters – for our university, community and world. Effectively communicating sustainability topics and engaging with those who seek to support our work are important parts of furthering our institutional sustainability mission. VCU’s Facilities Management Department is looking for a Communications and Engagement Coordinator to join our team in VCU Sustainability. The Communications and Engagement Coordinator will develop and maintain an effective sustainability communications strategy, as well as support digital and in-person engagement.This position reports directly to the Director of Sustainability and also has a functional reporting relationship to the Director of Communications for VCU Finance and Administration to ensure that all communications and engagement activities align with VCU processes and standards.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, communications, sustainability, environmental studies, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficiency in Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud or other graphic design software
  • Experience with some or all of the following: Social media engagement, website layout design, digital content creation, data visualization, engagement and technical writing skills
  • An interest in sustainability topics
  • Willingness to learn new skills and information related to the position’s responsibilities
  • The ability to act both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the capacity to interact with a variety of constituencies, including students, faculty, staff, community members, community leaders, program partners and volunteers, in a wide variety of settings
  • The ability to effectively plan, prioritize and problem solve while managing multiple projects and priorities
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Valid State of Virginia Driver's License
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Responsibilities

  • Collaboratively develop a comprehensive communications strategy for VCU Sustainability
  • Work with VCU Sustainability staff and staff in other VCU departments as needed to develop an actionable communications plan that includes digital and in-person communication strategies in compliance with VCU branding
  • Identify innovative ways to highlight sustainability engagement, discovery and innovation across VCU
  • Develop resources to enhance the success and well-being of VCU’s students, faculty, staff and community as they relate to sustainability topics
  • Manage and expand existing sustainability communications and engagement efforts
  • Contribute to outreach/engagement, communications, presentations, progress and metric reporting, and event planning related to the implementation of the One VCU Sustainability Plan
  • Implement all necessary updates and improvements to the VCU Sustainability website, and conduct periodic website content reviews to ensure accuracy
  • Manage and grow the impact of VCU Sustainability social media accounts
  • Supervise VCU Sustainability Communications & Engagement Interns, providing them with expertise, guidance and resources as needed
  • Guide, oversee, review and approve all intern-created communications and content before publication
  • Coordinate with the director of communications for VCU Finance and Administration for news and media inquiries
  • Monitor the VCU Sustainability general inbox
  • Grow the campus and community presence of VCU Sustainability
  • Develop public-facing events and student learning opportunities to enhance the reach of sustainability programs across campus
  • Attend sustainability-centered volunteer opportunities and events on and off campus as appropriate to capture photos, video content and/or quotes from participants
  • Represent VCU Sustainability during in-person outreach opportunities on campus, including New Student Orientation and Weeks of Welcome, as well as in the greater Richmond community
  • Identify on-campus engagement opportunities
  • Assist in designing signage and swag that increase the visibility of VCU Sustainability
  • Contribute to the other departmental efforts on an as-needed basis, including administrative processes and sustainability reporting commitments
