About The Position

At Northern Virginia Family Services (NVFS), the work you do every day helps change lives. As a Community and School Liaison, you will play a critical role in supporting children and youth experiencing homelessness—ensuring they have equal access to education and the resources they need to succeed. In this role, you will advocate for students and families, helping them navigate the school system and connect to essential services. You will work closely with school personnel, community partners, and McKinney-Vento programs to remove barriers, promote stability, and support academic success. Requirements

  • Prefer one of the following: Bachelor’s degree in Education from an accredited college; OR Associate’s degree with at least two (2) years of related work experience; OR At least four (4) years of related work experience with no relevant education
  • At least one (1) year of case management experience specializing in human services preferred
  • CPR/First Aid certification; if not certified, must be willing and able to obtain certification through NVFS-provided training
  • Experience with and knowledge of child development and/or education preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to build trust, rapport, and maintain relationships; must be able to create and maintain collaborative working relationships and effectively interact with clients and their families, schools, program staff, and community partners
  • Oral and written fluency in English; Spanish fluency a plus
  • Digital and technical proficiency, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Successful completion of background checks required upon hire
  • TB Test required
  • May be called upon to work beyond normal working hours to accommodate client meetings or the School Board Meetings
  • Must clear Motor Vehicle Record check, have a valid U.S. driver’s license to drive the Agency van for escorting clients to appointments / events as needed.
  • Must have reliable transportation to visit client homes and other designated community locations

Nice To Haves

  • At least one (1) year of case management experience specializing in human services preferred
  • Experience with and knowledge of child development and/or education preferred
  • Oral and written fluency in English; Spanish fluency a plus

Responsibilities

  • Meet with parents/guardians to support school enrollment, transportation coordination, and connection to tutoring or mentoring resources
  • Communicate regularly with teachers and families to support student academic progress
  • Participate in meetings such as Student Study Teams, IEPs, and discipline conferences to ensure clear communication and advocacy
  • Stay informed on the McKinney-Vento Act and communicate updates to families and shelter staff
  • Conduct client meetings and home visits to assess needs, track progress, and provide ongoing support
  • Refer clients to appropriate services and collaborate with internal teams and external providers
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with schools and community organizations
  • Ensure families receive access to educational, healthcare, dental, and mental health services
  • Strengthen community partnerships to maximize available resources for families
  • Support communication between schools and shelters to promote a positive educational experience
  • Accurately enter and maintain data in Apricot; track outcomes and report progress
  • Maintain organized, compliant case records in accordance with program and NVFS guidelines
  • Participate in supervision, case reviews, and ongoing professional development
  • Stay current on program tools, systems, and housing assistance resources
