About The Position

The Community Safety Navigator position at the City of Tucson’s Police Department provides peer-based support and navigation services to individuals and families experiencing hardships, including those impacted by substance use. This position plays a role in engaging individuals at high risk and connecting them to supportive services within the community. Work is performed under the supervision of the Substance Recovery Program Manager. This position does not supervise.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License - Arizona Department of Transportation - Motor Vehicle Division

  • Familiarity with substance use challenges and recovery supports, gained through professional work, volunteer service, and/or lived/personal experience, with a demonstrated ability to build trust and connect individuals to services.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies resource options for clients and continues time-limited support, primarily for individuals impacted by substance use.
  • Collaborates with management, outreach staff, and City departments to coordinate services.
  • Responds to requests for service from Tucson Fire and Police departments, other City of Tucson Departments, and the public, including individuals experiencing challenges related to substance use.
  • Ensures that assigned casework is provided for overdose response and outreach supplies, including naloxone, fentanyl test strips, harm reduction materials, brochures, and paperwork for treatment referrals and follow-up.
  • Assists with development and implementation of data collection strategies related to non-fatal overdose incidents, tracking outreach activities, follow-up efforts, and service engagement outcomes.
  • Assists with the planning and execution of events focused on overdose prevention, harm reduction education, and community awareness.
  • Provides data collection through appropriate tracking systems.
  • Participates in training, neighborhood meetings, public meetings, and other public forums, workgroup meetings and relevant substance abuse response meetings as assigned.
  • Networks with other City of Tucson departments and local nonprofit agencies and coalitions to strengthen support pathways.
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.
