About The Position

Control Electrician C is a non-exempt position in the construction, maintenance, and repair of substation electrical equipment / systems. Control Electrician C has a 2-4 year working knowledge of 525 kv and below substation electrical equipment, apparatus, and wiring. This position requires work in confined spaces and in elevated work areas, and works with various pieces of construction equipment specific to the trade. Control Electrician C requires an understanding of Electrical Theory with an emphasis on AC, DC circuits, transformers, breakers, etc. The job will require the electrician to install over current / recloser schemes and have a complete understanding of PLC logic.  May work independently or with others, occasionally work long hours during emergency conditions.

Requirements

  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Must be capable of climbing and working at heights up to 60 feet above ground. 
  • Must possess or be capable of obtaining a Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL). 
  • Must supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
  • Must supply own safety toed work boots.
  • Must be capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Must be capable of working in confined spaces/areas.
  • Must be able to work independently and/or with others.
  • Must be capable of learning to operate various types of heavy equipment:
  • Backhoes, excavators and skid steer loaders
  • Articulating Man-lifts
  • Trenchers
  • Rough Terrain Telescopic Forklifts
  • Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested. Schedules can change frequently and with short notice.
  • 90% travel required
  • Capable of following Company safety rules and policies.
  • Required to gain knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable electrical codes and standards.
  • Must be capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment.
  • Knowledge of substation electrical drawings (i.e. conduit details, conduit plans, cable schedules, cable termination prints, schematics) 
  • Basic knowledge in the use of voltmeters, meggers, amp meters, and rotation meters
  • Can terminate, connect and bundle control wiring
  • Basic use of basic rigging (slings and clevis) and proper hand signals
  • Ability to terminate and ground control cables in control panels and equipment.
  • Basic operational knowledge of substation equipment (i.e. transformers, breakers, capacitors)
  • Basic knowledge of IEEE device numbering standards
  • Able to recognize, correct and document errors/changes in engineering drawings.
  • Basic computer skills (i.e. Excel, Word, Outlook)

  • Works safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting and troubleshooting work of substation electrical equipment/systems which includes, but is not limited to, work involving the following:
  • Circuit Breakers
  • Transformers
  • Battery Banks and Chargers
  • Control Cable
  • Cable Terminations (Low Voltage)
  • Control Panel placement / installation
  • Control Buildings
  • Cable Tray / Raceways
  • Conduit and duck banks
  • Capacitor bank installations 23kv- 230 kv
  • Circuit Switchers, motor-operated switches
  • Annunciators
  • Fiber Optic Cable
  • Responsible for maintaining Company vehicles, test equipment and tools in good working conditions
  • Frequently works in close proximity of energized components with control systems requiring skill and care to protect the client from outages and the lives of themselves and others.
