About The Position

The Controller is responsible for managing the activities of the overall general accounting functions and members of their designated team. Will oversee, implement and maintain accounting systems, procedures and policies. This position ensures the accurate and timely compilation, analysis, and reporting of accounting data for our small business clients who rely on this information to move their business forward.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field or a deep understanding of GAAP
  • 7+ years of full-cycle accounting experience with general ledger responsibility, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role
  • Demonstrated experience in advising clients or others on financial results
  • Strong leadership and proven supervisory skills
  • Demonstrated mentoring, coaching, and organizational administrative skills required
  • Excited by process and automation
  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects and deadlines on time
  • Communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality while working with client data
  • Authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis

Responsibilities

  • Managing a team of approximately 5 Client Accounting Managers (CAMs) and ensuring they are following company procedures
  • Auditing the work of the team to develop, implement and maintain one or a combination of generally accepted accounting systems
  • Completing audits of CAMs end of month/quarter/year tasks and assigning additional tasks if lists are incomplete or require additional follow-up
  • Assisting CAMs with day-to-day processes and questions and assisting with their development
  • Coaching and encouraging employees during times of performance decline and when necessary working with HR to administer performance improvement plans
  • Communicating and following up to ensure CAMs are fully informed of all new information related to software products, services, procedures, client needs, and company-related issues, changes, or actions
  • Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement, and implementing new processes. Suggesting and drafting help documents when necessary
  • Publishing and locking end-of-month/quarter/year financials and notifying clients that financial statements have been completed
  • Proactively identify client issues, communicating and implementing timely solutions.
  • Creating and presenting continuing education content to the team
  • Providing ad-hoc, 30-day, 90-day, quarterly, and annual performance reviews to all assigned CAMs
  • Uncovering discrepancies between CAMs time logged and the budget and if the scope of work needs to be changed
  • Review accuracy of 1099 vendors and e-filing 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC forms to the appropriate parties (eg. client vendors, IRS, state tax agencies)
  • Review Sales, Use, and Excise Tax Returns on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis for accuracy and timeliness
  • Providing support to new CAMs during their first year through training and assisting with onboarding
  • Assisting CAMs with their out-of-office procedures and delegating work to other team members during their absence
  • Partnering with the leadership team to determine future hiring needs, goal setting, and participating in interviews
  • Work with CAM to complete Scope Review Form on an annual or as-needed basis
