About The Position

The Coop Engineering Student will apply theory and principles of civil engineering in planning, designing, and overseeing construction and maintenance of structures and facilities under the direction of engineering staff. Coop Engineering Students will be assigned to one of the following areas: Design Office - Employees would report to the Design Office in the downtown area of the City of Detroit and would perform a variety of duties as members of a design squad. The employees in this classification assist other members of the squad in the design Field Engineering Office Employees would report to the Field Engineering Office in the City of Wayne and would perform a variety of duties in the areas mainly of Construction/Survey, but also including Labs & Testing, Permit and Traffic. The employees will assist other members in the crew in construction layout of civil engineering projects, primarily road and bridge construction, using taping techniques, measuring angles using electronic theodolites, and establishing vertical control using automatic levels and self-reading or direct reading roads. The survey crew also obtains boundary and field topography information. During construction season these employees may be required to work extended hours (overtime) so as to provide the level of service required for the project. In the area of Labs & Testing, employee will assist members with interpreting drawings and specifications as related to pre-cast, assist with inspection for pre-cast concrete structures and pipe, inspection of concrete batch plant, inspection of concrete batch plant, and review process of soil boring drill rig and pavement coring rig if needed. In the area of Permit, employee will assist members with review of applications and projects, will use proficient computer skills (update project database and unit records and files, data entry) and communication skills with public. In the area of Traffic employee will assist members with design/review of permanent lane line markings, signing and/or stage construction plans for applications, design and maintenance, and will also assist with traffic signal timings and performing traffic counts as needed.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled at an accredited college or university in a course of study leading to a degree in Civil Engineering, Surveying or related field
  • College Sophomore Student with 30 credit hours and enrolled in a Civil Engineering Degree Program or related field
  • Possess a valid State of Michigan Driver's license and have an acceptable, safe driving record.
  • Students must complete a Wayne County Department of Personnel and Human Resources Application for Employment and submit a copy of their official transcript.
  • Students may apply for this position during the semester in which, upon completion, they will have attained sophomore class status.
  • Appointment is contingent upon the student submitting written proof from the university that they have attained sophomore class status.
  • Spreadsheets-Using a computer application to enter, manipulate, and format text and numerical data; insert, delete, and manipulate cells, rows, and columns; and create and save worksheets, charts, and graphs.
  • Internet-Navigating the Internet to find information, including the ability to open and configure standard browsers; use searches, hypertext references, and transfer protocols; and send and retrieve electronic mail (e-mail).
  • Navigation-Using scroll bars, a mouse, and dialog boxes to work within the computer's operating system. Being able to access and switch between applications and files of interest.
  • Word Processing-Using a computer application to type text, insert pictures, format, edit, print, save, and retrieve word processing documents
  • Graphics-Working with pictures in graphics programs or other applications, including creating simple graphics, manipulating the appearance, and inserting graphics into other programs.
  • Databases-Using a computer application to manage large amounts of information, including creating and editing simple databases, inputting data, retrieving specific records, and creating reports to communicate the information.
