About The Position

Works with the Director of Conservation Education and Engagement to develop and deliver high quality, engaging educational experiences that inspire conservation action. This includes leading and coordinating WildeCamp, overnight educational programs, winter tours, and other on-site programming, as well as supporting the Conservation Education and Engagement Department (CEED) team operations for programs both on and off site.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, conservation, biology, or a related field, or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum two years of professional experience in education programs required.
  • Knowledge of education program development required.
  • Knowledge of natural ecosystems, native wildlife, and conservation issues.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a wide range of computer software, including productivity, collaboration, and industry specific tools.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification required or ability to acquire within first six (6) months.
  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.
  • Possession of a valid state issued motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing is required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive, collaborative working relationships with all Wilds/Zoo team members and external partners required.
  • High level of motivation and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude in sometimes stressful situations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail required.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and organize work efficiently and cost effectively with minimal supervision required.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays required.
  • Ability to safely work in and around moving water; ability to hike long distances; and willingness to supervise and participate in outdoor recreational activities required.

  • Lifeguard certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and coordinates WildeCamp, overnight educational programs, winter education tours, and supports all other on site CEED programs and activities to ensure safe, engaging, mission aligned experiences.
  • Develops and teaches programs, tours, workshops, presentations, and other educational activities for a variety of audiences, ensuring alignment with learning objectives and conservation outcomes.
  • Collaborates with the CEED team to align programs and activities to spiraling curriculum and ensure programs are developmentally appropriate.
  • Ensures programs and activities advance established conservation behavior goals.
  • In conjunction with the Director of CEED, evaluates programs, makes recommendations, and implements changes accordingly.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises seasonal staff.
  • Acts as a representative of The Wilds by modeling professional behavior, communication, and appearance in all work activities.
  • Oversees timely and professional communication with program registrants, ensuring accurate information, clear expectations, and positive guest service.
  • Works with the marketing and communications teams to advertise The Wilds’ education programs and develop promotional materials as necessary.
  • Administers and maintains records for scholarship programs.
  • Assists with accreditation inspections including reviewing departments policies and procedures.
  • Maintains confidential records related to program participation and billing.
  • Assures safety of self, staff, animals, and guests through active participation in safety training, adherence to standard operating procedures, and proper use and maintenance of equipment.
  • Establishes diversity, equity, access, and inclusion as a priority in all programs and activities.
  • Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Works with the Facilities team to ensure development and maintenance of education trails and other land management projects, as well as coordinating maintenance of facilities, vehicles, equipment, etc.
  • Works in partnership with the Operations Department to develop interpretive tour content.
  • Actively supports and promotes the mission, values, and strategic goals of the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the goals, operations, and program needs of the Conservation Education and Engagement Department.
