About The Position

The Coordinator of Special Education is responsible for providing leadership in developing the special education programs for the school division. The Coordinator is a resource to teachers, principals, division level colleagues, parents and the community. The Coordinator provides support, directs change efforts and coordinates special education activities across the school division in conjunction with other coordinators of special education.

  • Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in a Special Education area (e.g., K-12 General Curriculum).
  • Must hold or be eligible for an endorsement in administration and supervision preK-12.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in developing, understanding, and promotion of objectives of the division, the curriculum, and instructional strategies
  • Work with the principals and teachers to organize and coordinate grade level and departmental meetings to develop continuity and articulation of the special education programs between and among grades and schools
  • Assist in coordinating special education programs with other academic and student support areas throughout the division
  • Assist in coordinating the activities of the division curriculum and materials selection for special education programs
  • Coordinate with academic coordinators to develop curriculum and strategies for special education teachers
  • Participate in Multi-Tiered System of Supports team meetings
  • Collaborate with other division special educators to create and disseminate procedures in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations
  • Schedule and facilitate special education eligibility and IEP meetings at assigned schools
  • Review all special education documents for compliance and individualized program planning for students with disabilities
  • Coordinate instructional activities related to the implementation of the Virginia Assessment Program
  • Collaborate with school PLCs to analyze data and plan future lesson plans and program revisions
  • Assist in determining the types of special education programs needed by the schools and make appropriate recommendations
  • Support teams in developing Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). Ensure the use of positive behavioral interventions and supports.
  • Keep informed of the latest research, trends, and development in special education to disseminate to principals and teachers
  • Observe special education teachers and provide feedback on specially designed instruction (SDI). Assist general education teachers with inclusion strategies and differentiated instruction.
  • Participate in division wide leadership team meetings
  • Participate in division professional learning by providing sessions for teachers and other division staff in areas of special education, Section 504, high leverage practices, inclusive practices, and other relevant topics
  • Prepare division and School Board reports
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Student Services
