About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408 Reporting to the Correctional Program Supervisor, this position is responsible for answering offender questions, giving information about classification and sentencing status, corresponding with offender families, and providing supportive counseling.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of supportive counseling techniques
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution Or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety Or An equivalent combination of training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting initial assessments of offender needs and develop case plans, monitor for compliance and results and revise as appropriate to meet offender needs and achieve system objectives.
  • Assessing offender behavior and developing counseling strategies to achieve desired offender progress.
  • Organizing and directing the activities of various rehabilitation programs provided for offenders.
  • Conducting work release and home leave investigations, coordinating community resources, planning and coordinating transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community.
  • Making recommendations to the offender classification committees on an offender's program involvement or custody level change.
  • Working with offenders whose problems, needs, and comprehension levels vary greatly.
  • Working in all sections of a Medium/ Minimum Custody prison facility, which places them in constant contact with offenders.
