About The Position

The Correctional Officer/Dispatcher is responsible for the communication between the public and the law enforcement officers, ambulances and fire departments. Provide courtroom security for Judge, court personnel, jury and all participants. Supervise inmates in accordance with established policies, regulations and procedures, observe conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes. This position is essential as required by the MN Department of Corrections. Duties are interchangeable depending on department needs and requirements. Assigned tasks may vary from day to day.

Requirements

High School graduate or equivalent
1-2 years experience in customer service/secretarial/medical
No felonies or gross misdemeanors
Valid driver's license

Responsibilities

Correctional Officer 80% of Duties
Must maintain Tazer and Use of Force certification.
Must maintain CJIS, BCA, PREA, and CPR certification.
Supervise, control, escort inmates, visitors, staff and vendors.
Ensuring all movement including transports is authorized.
Process person received including photos, fingerprints, searches, property storage, and booking information.
Qualifies charges, perform initial medical assessment, collect medical information and personal history of inmates.
Conduct random well-being observation checks at least once every 30 minutes & more frequently for special watch inmates; counting and recording prisoners in & out of facility.
Process, coordinate, and disseminate all needs including but not limited to; medical issues, courts, programs, visitation, food, clothing, inmate requests and shelters.
Supervise and direct inmates; enforcing rules, observe behaviors, and classify inmates based on behavior.
Maintain and update records on inmates, including logs, incident, grievances, profile information and forms.
Administer medication; including self-administered diabetic checks (Blood sugar and Insulin), other medical issues and treatment of inmates according to physician orders or dietary restrictions.
Provide security for medical staff.
Assist mental health staff in setting up visits with mental health staff, monitoring inmates on mental health watches.
Ensures inmates are available for court appearances
Provide court security by supervising inmates in court.
Control all access to the jail and maintains jail keys.
Prevent unauthorized persons from entering the facility and prevents escape of inmates.
15% of Duties
Search inmates and their living quarters for contraband.
Monitor inmate mail, texts, phone, and video calls.
Operate all jail equipment properly (restraint chair, Taser, medical equipment, cell extraction suit, suicide prevention gowns)
Inventory all security items, keys, tools, and equipment.
Notify supervisor of any discrepancies.
Process inmate releases, return of, medication, property and money upon release.
Supervise Huber and STS (sentence to serve) performance
Get inmates in touch with attorneys, clergy, etc.
Urine tests for inmates on behalf of law enforcement, probation or courts.
Collecting fees and payments; Huber, bail, etc.
Collect, record and deposit arrested inmate’s cash into the electronic kiosk during the intake process
Perform minor maintenance and janitorial duties on a daily basis.
Attend training on updated policies and practices pertaining to the Jail including Taser and use of force, or other topics as deemed necessary by administration
Properly prepare reports and forms, file documents, operate telephones and computers
Document major and minor rule violations and submit reports.
5% of Duties
Respond to and assess emergency situations such as fights, suicide attempts, threats to staff, fire alarms, PREA, contraband recovery, medical situations, enforcing rules, restraining inmates and responding to calls for assistance.
Document all facts of incidents by preparing reports on jail problems and discipline.
Maintenance of oxygen and first responder medical equipment.
Supervise inmate housekeeping and responsibilities in the jail units and inmate worker activities throughout the facility such as laundry and kitchen.
Scheduling inmate jail time for sentencing and book and releases.
Order supplies
Check fire hazards and security locks
Assist dispatch as needed.
Performs related duties as required.
Bailiff duties for assigned staff
Monitor the security metal detector before and during court. (Once court is in session bailiff must keep people out of courtroom until they go through security.)
Check all areas for contraband and weapons: Hallways, conference rooms, bathrooms, law library.
Ensure doors that should be locked are secure.
Check all floors before court is in session.
Troubleshoot technology issues on remote court accessed proceedings
Perform sweeps of the courthouse- inside and out.
Keep all people in courtroom secure and safe: Deter and prevent disruptions, and violence in the courtroom.
Assess and respond appropriately to disruptive or dangerous situations and secure the area.
Possess and demonstrate knowledge of/training for how to handle high profile cases, active shooter situations, hostile parties, any threats made to the court, court staff, attorney’s and general public.
Must maintain Tazer and Use of Force certification.
Keep jury safe, secure and away from public, attorneys, witnesses etc. so jury cannot be tampered with.
Possess and demonstrate knowledge of evacuation situations.
Maintain decorum during courtroom and remote proceedings
Dispatch 80% of duties
Operate computer, telephones, radio, doors, visitation system, and intercoms simultaneously.
Must maintain CJIS, BCA, and CPR certification.
Must maintain ProQA medical dispatch requirements and certifications
Maintains overall jail security, including key control.
Answer emergent and non-emergent phone calls; and respond to duress alarms.
Dispatch appropriate units to calls, including law enforcement, fire, and EMS.
Accurately create and complete ICRs for report based calls.
Provide pertinent pre-arrival information to all units.
Receive findings from units on scene to determine need for additional resources.
Dispatch additional resources via radio, phone, pagers, and teletype.
Maintain LE and medical safety by performing timely status checks.
Maintain RMS with accuracy and completeness.
Prioritize calls.
Direct and assist public.
Monitor and control security interlocks and cameras building-wide and specific areas of the courthouse.
Maintain and monitor communication with Jail staff including phone, radio, and intercom calls.
Oversee persons entering and exiting the jail/jail lobby.
Dispatch EMS services for their calls of service.
Maintain computer log of all non-ICR information received.
Enter, validate, and maintain restraining order and warrant files.
Search Statewide Supervision site for criminal history and active supervision.
Run Criminal Histories
Provide information/communication/data to Law Enforcement and other Law Enforcement personnel/agencies.
Maintain cleanliness in the Dispatch Center .
Daily pager tests.
15% of duties
Respond to intercom calls from inmates.
Oversee and conduct transport of inmates.
Direct public to appropriate agency or person to help locate information.
Answer questions from the public requiring knowledge of law.
Update, cancel, and validate CJIS files.
Receive bail/bond funds; accurately receive and record financial transactions, and ensure compliance with cash-handling policies and procedures
5% of duties
Monitor weather and alert proper units in the event of a weather emergency.
Provide answering service for Mora Public Utilities and East Central Electric.
Activate and deactivate civil defense sirens.
Perform radio checks.
Conduct pat-down searches on inmates.
Assist jail when needed.
Performs related duties as required.
