About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408 Reporting to the Correctional Lieutenant I, this position will be responsible for assigning lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Facility Operations.
  • Knowledge of Prisons’ Policy and Procedures.
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing officers’ activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained.
  • Arranging work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures, and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Ensuring staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed.
  • Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of offenders.
  • Giving direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies.
  • Leading staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s).
  • Responding to emergencies, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders.
  • Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigating and acting, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Preparing and reviewing a variety of reports.
  • Completing annual performance evaluations and assisting in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
  • Conducting staff briefing sessions.
  • Performing other related duties as required.
