About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Salary Range $39,244-$68,679 This is an INTERNAL POSTING open ONLY for current employees of the NC Department of Adult Correction. This is a position at Piedmont Correctional Institution located in Salisbury, N.C. (Rowan County), which is a Medium male prison facility housing 800 inmates. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer II’s in medium-custody facilities or institutions, increasing the custody and security coverage. Positions assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions may serve as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant II and/or the Correctional Assistant Superintendent. At this level, employees may supervise inmates in restrictive housing.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the overall operation of correctional facilities; and applicable policies
  • Thorough knowledge of procedures, rules, and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates, and of correctional methods, techniques, practices, and procedures
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
  • Applicants must pass a background check to be eligible for this job.
