About The Position

The Corrections Maintenance Worker position performs maintenance work in the repairs of institution buildings, equipment, and machinery at IYC Chicago. The ideal candidate would not only possess these skills, but also be motivated to instruct youth that have been committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice in the performance of semi-skilled maintenance tasks, and transfer their skills to youth that have a desire to learn. This position is part of the team of Maintenance staff that work to maintain the buildings and grounds at IYC Chicago. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply!

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years high school.
  • Requires one (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds.
  • Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six (6) months of employment.
  • Requires the ability to lift and carry containers/equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires completion of an approved pre-service training course within six (6) months of employment.
  • Requires the ability to pass an IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires the ability to pass a drug screen.
  • Requires the ability to comply with local and federal health mandates.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience applying knowledge of the machinery and equipment used in buildings and grounds maintenance.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in the economical usage of materials and supplies.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience of planning and laying out work according to requirements of assignment, and to lead youth by example and instruction.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in enforcing disciplinary, safety, security, and custodial measures for the control of youth.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience applying knowledge of institutional rules, regulations, and requirements for managing youth behavior.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance work in the repairs of institutional buildings machinery and equipment, instructs and supervises students in the performance of semi-skilled maintenance tasks, snow removal and minor care of shrubbery.
  • Responsible for communications with the Superintendent and/or Assistant Superintendent about the needs of the institution works only from work orders that are approved. Makes local purchases as approved by the Superintendent and/or Assistant Superintendent.
  • Accountable for all tools and equipment belonging to the institution,loads and transports containers and equipment. Inspects equipment to ensue it is in good working order and makes equipment available to other staff.
  • Performs minor plumbing repairs and electrical repairs in the facility, advises supervisor of major electrical and plumbing problems.
  • Coordinates vehicle repair and maintenance, supervises a small repair shop within the institution, cleans and services grease trap as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonable within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
