About The Position

The nature program area leader is responsible for preparing and implementing educational and recreational programs for the blind and visually impaired children and adults. They will coordinate and oversee all camp nature/outdoor education. Page Break Examples of Activities include: Hiking Gardening Ecology Nature crafts Mt. Veeder hike Overnight camp outs Outdoor cooking Birding by ear Native American Culture / History Plants and animals Science experiments Nature games

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • High School graduate
  • Current First Aid and CPR certifications
  • Previous work in a camp, school, or community service setting
  • Ability to enforce safety and emergency procedures
  • Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situation requiring first aid
  • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness or injury)
  • Possess the endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
  • Must be willing to live on camp premises
  • Must be able to lift 70 pounds

Nice To Haves

  • Some college education preferred
  • Experience working with individuals who are blind/visually impaired preferred
  • Knowledge of Braille and/or sign language preferred

Responsibilities

  • Nature Program Development & Instruction
  • Design and implement an engaging nature program suitable for campers of all ages and abilities.
  • Lead and teach classes and activities focused on nature and outdoor education.
  • Assess and evaluate the effectiveness of nature programs, making improvements as needed.
  • Safety & Staff Training
  • Train staff on their responsibilities within nature program areas, ensuring proper supervision and instruction.
  • Enforce safety procedures for all campers and staff participating in nature activities.
  • Facility & Equipment Management
  • Maintain nature program equipment and materials.
  • Monitor the natural environment for hazards or potential enhancements, reporting them to the appropriate staff.
  • Conduct daily safety, cleanliness, and maintenance checks of the nature program area.
  • Inventory supplies regularly and ensure timely replacements.
  • Camper & Staff Supervision
  • Assist with camper placements in nature programs and cabin assignments as needed.
  • Evaluate volunteers, Counselors-in-Training (CITs), and counselors throughout the summer, providing feedback to the Assistant Director.
  • Step in as a camp counselor when necessary to support camper supervision.
  • Camp Engagement & Collaboration
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, providing leadership and support as assigned.
  • Help organize and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and all-camp functions.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings.
