About The Position

The role of the counselor is to promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development for all students.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree required; field of study correlated to teaching assignment as an elementary or secondary counselor with the appropriate Arkansas licensure code.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background checks.
  • Appropriate personal and professional conduct at all times around students, other staff members and the general public.

  • Teachers with experience are valued; however, no prior experience is required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the counseling team to develop a written guidance plan in cooperation with the principal outlining specific areas of responsibility, annual school guidance program goals, and activities for attaining goals.
  • Assist the administration in preparing the master schedule and student class assignments.
  • Coordinate the administration of the standardized testing program and interpret test results for students, parents and professional personnel.
  • Demonstrate skill in providing technical assistance to instructional staff concerning counseling and guidance.
  • Collaborate with teachers and administrators to develop student improvement plans to assist students in reaching their academic potential.
  • Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school policies for public school guidance and counseling.
  • Promote and support efforts to help each student develop problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Assist students in learning appropriate school behavior and in developing self-understanding and social skills through individual and group guidance and counseling activities.
  • Work with students and their parents to develop educational and occupational plans.
  • Assist in placement of students in special programs.
  • Provide individual and group counseling for students and consult with their parents concerning problems that interfere with learning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Be knowledgeable of course offerings, curriculum and graduation requirements.
  • Maintain accurate information regarding graduation requirements and state testing for assigned students.
  • Review student transcripts for accuracy and correct course placement.
  • Provide information to students and parents about course offerings, college letters of reference, financial aid, and future careers.
  • Assist students in college scholarships and college applications including NCAA Clearinghouse.
