About The Position

Superior Court District 36, Burke & Caldwell Counties, is seeking a qualified individual to perform a variety of case management functions for the Senior Resident Superior Court Judge in the district. May manage the office in the absence of the judge. Various paralegal & judicial assistant skills with duties to the local resident Superior Court Judges and out of town Superior Judges assigned to District 36. Ability to discretely handle very important and highly confidential matters. This position reports to the Senior Resident Superior Court Judge. Work hours are 8:00AM - 5:00PM, Monday - Friday.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: case management and calendaring rules and procedures to administer the case tracking and calendaring system; court system and organization to effectively interact with court officials, court procedures and legal terminology to communicate with court officials and law enforcement personnel; interpersonal skills to work with court personnel and the general public; organizational skills to monitor case activity and prepare court calendars; and principles of management related to the supervision of staff.
  • Skills in: MS Word, Excel, and Outlook; and strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required.
  • Ability to: use office automation equipment to prepare legal documents and maintain the case tracking system; summarize, compile, and tabulate narrative and numerical material, analyze and record information, and balance figures (basic Math skills); learn specific laws, rules and regulations relating to the court system and programs; be resourceful in gathering information and in answering unusual inquires and questions; and compose correspondence independently following established guidelines.
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in court administration, criminal justice, public administration, business, or a related field, and three years of progressive experience in the court system to acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work described; or a master's degree in a related field plus one year of experience in the court system; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • working knowledge of NC Administrative Office of the Courts digital filing and case management system known as Enterprise Justice or Odyssey.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise staff, including planning, directing, and reviewing work, performance management (including goal setting and evaluations), scheduling, approve time/leave, etc.
  • Develops case management procedures, tracks status of cases and prepares periodic reports, schedules cases and resolves scheduling conflicts, prepares and distributes calendars, and answer questions regarding status of cases.
  • Composes and prepares a variety of materials including correspondence, reports, and legal documents.
  • Assists with legal research.
  • Schedules appointments and meetings, makes travel arrangements, and maintains administrative records for the local Resident Superior Court Judges and staff.
  • Ensures office supplies and equipment are ordered, distributed, and maintained.
  • Screens callers and visitors, answer inquiries, secures and gives information.
  • Screens and routes mail according to contents of communication including email.
  • May provide support services to other programs in the district such as arbitration, mediation, or jury management.
  • May serve on committees and attend meetings as assigned.
