About The Position

We’re looking for an experienced Creative Director, Copy to join our growing in-house creative team. In this role, you’ll help define the voice and narrative direction of OpenAI at a moment when the story is still being written. You’ll lead concept and storytelling across campaigns, product launches, and cultural moments—working closely with design, product, research, marketing, and comms from the earliest stages. This role sits at the intersection of creative leadership and writing craft. You’ll shape the big ideas behind our work while ensuring the storytelling feels human, clear, and culturally resonant. To us, creativity is a team sport. Ideas get better when you talk them through and build on each other’s thinking. We value curiosity over certainty, kindness over ego, and the ability to balance craft with decisiveness. This role is based in San Francisco. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

Requirements

  • Have 10+ years of experience in copywriting and creative leadership, gained at a creative agency known for creative excellence and/or in-house at a modern technology company, with experience in both strongly preferred
  • Are a senior-level creative leader who has developed and led narrative strategy and campaign concepts
  • Have a strong conceptual mindset and the ability to shape big creative ideas that scale across multiple channels
  • Have deep fluency in product storytelling and translating complex technologies into accessible narratives
  • Are an exceptional writer with a strong sense of voice, tone, rhythm, and structure
  • Have experience leading cross-functional creative collaboration with design, production, strategy, and marketing teams
  • Can balance creative ambition with clarity, precision, and accessibility
  • Operate autonomously and drive work forward in fast-moving, ambiguous environments
  • Have strong project ownership and the ability to guide work from concept through execution

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading integrated campaigns, product launches, or major brand initiatives
  • Background in editorial, long-form storytelling, or documentary work
  • Familiarity with brand systems, narrative frameworks, and multi-channel storytelling
  • Curiosity about AI, creativity, and the future of human expression

Responsibilities

  • Lead and shape storytelling across brand campaigns, launches, and cultural moments
  • Own narrative direction and creative concepting for key initiatives and creative workstreams
  • Develop campaign ideas, messaging frameworks, and story systems that translate complex technology into clear, compelling human narratives
  • Guide the voice, tone, and storytelling craft of creative work across channels
  • Partner deeply with design, motion, production, and agency teams to develop integrated creative concepts
  • Collaborate with Product, Research, Comms, and Marketing to translate capabilities and use cases into emotionally resonant storytelling
  • Provide creative leadership and direction across projects from early concept through final execution
  • Manage multiple complex creative initiatives simultaneously with clarity and confidence
  • Evolve and steward OpenAI’s voice and narrative across campaigns, launches, and brand storytelling
  • Help raise the bar for conceptual thinking, writing craft, and creative ambition across the team
