Job Summary Performs a wide variety of computed tomography exams and CT procedures. Participates in Interventional CT exams by assisting the Radiologist using proper sterile technique and producing CT images. Reviews and obtains all relevant patient information including but not limited to orders and ensuring exam concordant with exam request, medication usage, patient history and current lab values. Follows all CT procedures according to the departments procedures and protocols by selecting correct exposure factors, algorithms and scan fields. Utilizes ALARA principles and appropriate infection control techniques to ensure a safe work environment for all employees and patients.

Requirements

  • Education Graduate from an accredited Radiography program
  • Licensure, Certification and Registration Requirements: Radiologic Technologist registered through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, (ARRT) with CT advanced certification required (R.T)(R)(CT) and 1 year experience in CT preferred.
  • Licensed in the state of Connecticut.
  • BLS certification American Heart
  • Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements: General orientation at time of hire.
  • Healthstream requirements annually and participates in the department quality,safety and compliance initiatives.
  • Other programs as mandated by the Hospital and all other mandated programs as they occur.
  • Physical Requirements: On feet most of the day with lifting greater than 50 lbs and occasionally up to 35 lbs routinely.
  • Transports patients when needed by stretchers or wheelchairs to and from the examining room and other areas.
  • Physical agility including but not limited to bending, stooping, walking, reaching, standing, pulling, pushing and twisting.
  • Work Environment: Radiation exposure, patient elements, chemical fume exposure. Frequent changes in lighting levels.
  • Cognitive Requirements: Excellent oral communication skills, literate in English, excellent reading and mathematical skills, ability to read, comprehend and execute complicated and detailed written and oral instructions.
  • Good organizational skills, excellent decision making skills and writing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Performs CT or special procedures according to department protocols and procedures.
  • Enters designated patient data into the computer, chooses appropriate examination protocols and sets equipment for proper technique, model/type of exam, speed of scan, level of cross-sectional scans, etc.
  • Uses laser beam to check proper positioning and centering of patients.
  • Attaches required immobilization and supportive devices.
  • Obtains "scout view" on console to assure images will contain areas to be studied.
  • Arranges patient in proper position for the procedure
  • Manipulates equipment to enhance images and produce appropriate exposure.
  • Utilizes knowledge of anatomy and physiology to detect abnormal patterns in images and uses independent judgment to obtain scans required to make proper diagnosis.
  • Carries out special manipulation of display data, reformats to produce axial slices and creates an endless variety of plans and exposure angles, plotting of dynamic vascular or circulation studies, rapid scanning, high resolution review, segmentation, etc.
  • Reviews information from patient’s records; i.e. known allergies to IV or oral contrast media, previous barium studies,current medication usage and lab values.
  • Administers contrast Media Loads syringe with prescribed dye for hand or power injection.
  • Maintains sterile techniques when preparing contrast media Administers medications and adjusts power injector to coordinate timing of scan with administration of medication.
  • Maintains communication Explains procedures to be performed to each patient.

  • Provides reassurance to anxious patients (+)
  • Reads reports/STAT reports to authorized staff over phones. (+)
  • Answers inquiries and provides requested assistance on matters dealing with Radiology, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine and MRI services.
  • Maintains communication with radiology to ensure proper protocol on each patient
  • Performs related duties.
  • Monitors and observes patient's condition and brings any unusual circumstances to attention of supervisor, nursing staff or radiologist.
  • Initiates emergency procedures, within authorized limits, as required.
  • Performs daily quality control tests on equipment.
  • Assists physicists with tests for equipment efficiency and safety.
  • Assists clerical support staff with patient scheduling, recording, keeping and related tasks. (+)
  • Assists in assuring that adequate supplies and equipment are on hand, when needed
  • Maintains equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition.
  • Remains available for emergency on-call as needed.
  • Attends 66% of staff meetings and monthly inservices as needed.
  • Assists with training and orientation of new employees.
