About The Position

Be a part of a world-class academic health-care system at UChicago Medicine as a Computerized Tomography Scanner Technologist (CT) in Orland Park. As a Computerized Tomography Technologist (CT), you will have the opportunity to experience new technologies, learn and perform advanced imaging skills, and participate in various aspects of research studies and clinical trials. The Computerized Tomography Scanner Technologist performs diagnostic imaging studies as assigned, applies principles of radiation protection, exercises professional judgment in the performance of imaging procedures, provides necessary patient care during the course of imaging procedures.

Requirements

  • Satisfactory completion of formal Radiology technology training in an AMA approved school
  • Current registry by ARRT
  • Advanced CT certification required within 12months of hire date
  • Licensure by the State of Illinois (IEMA)
  • CPR and BLS training required.
  • Effective communication skills and excellent patient care skills required

Responsibilities

  • Has knowledge of and utilizes appropriate patient care protocol relating to the physical and psychological needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients.
  • Performs imaging duties as assigned
  • Performs computed tomography procedures according to set protocols established by radiologists
  • Evaluates the request for procedures and assesses the patient to determine the appropriate procedure protocol and method of application
  • Appropriately employs imaging systems, accessory devices, and patient positioning techniques to generate quality images
  • Cares for the patient throughout the procedure according to department and hospital standards of patient care and age-specific sensitivities
  • Participates in lifting and transporting patients to and from imaging devices.
  • Evaluates the resultant images in comparison with industry standards and takes corrective action, if needed. Refers to appropriate reference materials for clarification when needed
  • Provides patient education prior to, during and subsequent to the procedure in order to reduce the patient’s anxiety and enhance his comfort zone with and tolerance of the procedure
  • Performs preliminary interpretation by applying independent judgment, subsequently customizing the procedure accordingly. Uses this knowledge to expedite intervention by the radiologist, if necessary
  • Notifies physicians as required of changes in the condition of the patients or regarding unique imaging characteristics
  • Maintains level of flexibility to accommodate daily schedule and high level of productivity
  • In collaboration with the Imaging Team Leader and Imaging Center Leader, learn and become proficient in new procedures and new levels of software as they become available
  • Prepares contrast media, performs venipuncture, and administers contrast to patients under the direction of the physician
  • Utilizes Radiology information systems in accordance with current guidelines and protocols.
  • Documents imaging procedures manually and/or electronically to insure correct charging, and patient and film file tracking
  • Regards safety of patients as a priority in performing studies
  • Completes patient screening and exam documentation
  • Performs imaging procedures in accordance with safe radiation safety practices as determined by the Illinois Emergency Management Administration to limit radiation exposure to patient, self and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Handles patient in conformance with all established safety procedures.
  • Practices safety in and around the magnetic field with all people and equipment.
  • Processes films and patient records in conformance with all established operational procedures.
  • Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate action and initiates life support measures where appropriate.
  • Treats patients in a professional and courteous manner
  • Uses AIDET at every patient interaction
  • Instructs patient in exam procedures
  • Is aware of and responsive to physical and psychological needed of patients under his/her care
  • Communicates appropriately with radiologists and referring physicians
  • Maintains technical imaging equipment to be in proper working conditioned
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment or housekeeping issues to appropriate person
  • Keeps equipment and work area clean and neat
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of all necessary supplies
  • Participates in continuing educational programs to maintain and upgrade technical skills
  • Contributes to the orientation of new staff technologist and student technologist as required
  • Must be available for week-ends, holidays, and rotating on-call responsibilities
  • Performs other duties as requested by senior management.
