About The Position

The University of Virginia is excited to announce an opportunity within FM’s Housing Zone for a Custodial Supervisor. This position offers the unique opportunity to make a significant impact on our community's daily life, ensuring our living spaces are not only clean but also welcoming and safe. This vital position is responsible for helping to ensure that our university housing facilities—encompassing 8,500 beds across 187 buildings and totaling 3 million square feet of residential space; are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness and safety. Our diverse portfolio includes single-family homes, traditional residence halls, and apartments, presenting a unique and rewarding challenge for our custodial team. The scheduled shift for this position is M - F, 8am - 4:30pm. Role Overview: As the Custodial Supervisor, you will lead a dynamic team of 10-15, dedicated to ensuring our university housing remains a beacon of cleanliness, health, and vibrancy. Your mission is to uphold the highest standards of custodial service through effective team supervision, meticulous scheduling, and comprehensive training. Key to success is your ability to forge positive, professional relationships across the campus community, including with facility occupants, staff, colleagues, students, visitors, and leadership. Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: A minimum of two years of experience in custodial/housekeeping or another service industry is required.
  • Licensure: A valid driver's license with a zero or positive points balance and at least 2 years of driving experience is required and must be maintained while in this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in custodial maintenance, including the ability to demonstrate use of cleaning equipment and supplies, along with experience in a leadership or supervisory capacity is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Team Management: Guide, mentor, and inspire your team towards achieving and exceeding departmental expectations through effective supervision, coaching, and performance management.
  • Operational Excellence & Collaboration: Oversee the scheduling and execution of routine and special custodial tasks, ensuring operations are safe, efficient, and meet the highest standards. Collaborate closely with maintenance leadership to coordinate activities and ensure a seamless operational environment.
  • Training & Development: Lead training initiatives to ensure the team is proficient in the latest custodial techniques and safety protocols, fostering professional growth and skill enhancement.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Maintain positive, professional relationships with all stakeholders, including facility occupants, staff, colleagues, students, visitors, and department leadership, ensuring custodial services align with university community needs.
  • Project Management & Additional Responsibilities: Manage small to medium-sized custodial projects, ensuring timely, within-scope, and budget-compliant completion while working closely with maintenance leadership to ensure a unified approach to facility management. This collaboration includes supporting our HVAC PMs and overseeing essential maintenance tasks such as eye-wash station PMs and mechanical room inspections.
  • Develop and implement custodial work schedules for assigned areas. Maintain written records of work scheduled and completed.
  • Supervise members of custodial team and provide them with frequent and constructive feedback.
  • Ensure all required custodial projects are completed in a timely, professional manner.
  • Track purchases and update inventories.
  • Conduct and submit routine safety inspections.
  • Ability to work independently, be proactive with managing workload, and anticipate operational/small-scale projects.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
