ROLE AND POSITION OBJECTIVES: As a Cutter Grind Machinist for General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS) Precision Structures & Optics (PSO) located in Cullman, AL, you’ll be a member of a cross functional team responsible for precision grinding, sharpening, and reconditioning of cutting tools used in aerospace manufacturing operations. This role requires a high degree of technical skill and attention to detail to ensure cutting tools meet exact specification and quality standards. At General Dynamics Mission Systems we manufacture Beryllium products for use in the most demanding applications, across the aerospace, defense, and nuclear industries. Our products are used in high performance sensing systems for targeting and acquisition, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, and are hardened for the battlefield environment.

Requirements

  • Technical certificate or 2 years of experience or equivalent is required.
  • CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
  • Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments
  • Maintaining a high level of craftsmanship
  • Ability to find safe, effective, and economical ways to improve productivity

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in cutting and grinding processes
  • Familiarity with manual and/or CNC grinders
  • Knowledge of machine shop processes, tools, and terminology; ability to work from blueprints, advanced drawings, process sheets and sketches
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills; able to troubleshoot and resolve issues in a quick, effective manner

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate cutter grinding machines, including universal tool and cutter grinders
  • Sharpen, recondition, and inspect end mills, drills, reamers, taps, and other cutting tools
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work orders
  • Measure and inspect tools using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, gauges, optical comparators)
  • Maintain accurate records of tool reconditioning and inventory
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and report equipment issues
  • Follow all safety protocols and FOD (Foreign Object Debris) prevention procedures
