About The Position

As the Cytotechnologist, you will be a vital member of a dynamic team responsible for…   Prepares, accessions and screens slide preparations of various cellular samples for changes in cell morphology following established standards and practices.  Assists pathologists in the diagnosis of abnormalities due to benign or malignant conditions.  Has total understanding of patient safety and laboratory techniques necessary to guarantee complete patient safety and anonymity.

Requirements

  • ASCP registered or ASCP eligible required.
  • Will consider HHS-grandfathered Cytotechnologist if experience remarkable.
  • Applies principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.  Interprets and extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.  Deals with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems, including but not limited to, order entry, inquiry and specimen tracking.
  • Excellent communication skills including telephone, written correspondence and speaking.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and those regulations relating to the use of all hazardous chemicals utilized and disposed of in the Laboratory.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology.

Nice To Haves

  • 5 years of experience in a hospital cytology lab preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Screens GYN and non-GYN slides for cellular changes and refers all slides with cellular changes to pathologist as ASCP and CAP standards dictate.
  • Maintains and operates equipment essential for cytology Section of Clinical Lab according to manufacturer and laboratory procedures.
  • Accessions: accurately identifies patient samples and accessions them into Pathology Information System using correct account numbers and cytology alpha codes.
  • Responsible for proper storage of slides once pathologist completes microscopic exam.
  • Uses and disposes of hazardous materials as stated in laboratory policies and State and Federal Guidelines.
  • Performs dumping of chemicals into larger barrels for pickup and disposal by outside contracted company.
  • Utilizes appropriate PPE when performing dumping tasks.
  • Informs Lab Management or Safety Department when limits of chemical barrel volumes (260 gallons) and time limits (180 days since accumulation start date) are near so pick up of hazardous waste can be scheduled.
  • Cover slipping and processing: including preparation of HPV and Chlamydia/GC specimens for send out and Non-Gyn specimen preparation. Staining and maintenance, including maintaining the stain and equipment records, general care of the ThinPrep2009 and centrifuge.
  • Responsible for communicating with providers as needed, accurately billing and reviewing charges in addition to properly filing slides and reports.
  • Participates in the annual CAP Cytology proficiency testing.
  • Will assist in coverage of histology tasks as needed and assist Diagnostic Imaging on specimens needing immediate evaluation.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots and updates pathology specific software.  Creates departmental reports, investigates dictation system queries.
  • Monitors and orders supplies.
  • Ensures section of the lab is within regulatory requirements through the continuous monitoring and completion of self-inspections, participates in both onsite and offsite inspections as needed.
  • Review and maintain procedure manuals.
