About The Position

Invictus Academy is an independent public charter school located in El Cerrito and we are seeking a Dean of Students (grades 7-12) to join our team who believes deeply that the mission, model, and values at Invictus are driving improved educational outcomes for students. The Dean of Students plays an invaluable role in building the cultural and academic foundation of Invictus Academy. In close partnership with the Principal, the Dean of Students designs, executes, monitors, and continuously improves school culture systems, including parent involvement, discipline and restorative justice, and supporting teachers to create joyful, structured, and productive learning environments. The Dean of Students will lead staff professional development, interface with all members of the campus community, and be relied upon as a leader on campus. We are seeking exceptional individuals to execute the following essential job functions and professional responsibilities:

Requirements

  • Earned Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Pass a Criminal Background Check through the Department of Justice.
  • Obtain a negative TB reading prior to starting employment.

  • Our ideal candidate has worked with high needs students and has experience in effectively and safely preventing, de-escalating, and responding to student needs.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Dean of Students for grades 7-12
  • Manage, orchestrate, and oversee supervision system, including maps and modify the system/coverage needs throughout the year
  • Support Summer School programming and execution
  • Set and hold high expectations for school culture, ensuring teachers and staff create and maintain a positive, joyful, structured, and productive school culture
  • Develop trusting, authentic relationships with students, their families, and staff
  • Collect and monitor school culture data, designing and implementing schoolwide and classroom-specific responses to address areas of need
  • Manage and oversee school wide communication with parents, driving towards a ratio of three positive communications for each corrective one
  • Initiate and respond to communications with families around student behavior and lead meetings with families to define plans to support students while in their classes and on campus
  • Provide and manage supervision during arrival, bathrooms, transitions, lunch, and dismissal to support a safe and productive environment
  • Oversee all DeansList systems, including free dress indicator, daily/weekly reports, ratio watch, strong moves and deductions system
  • Ensure referral entries and DeansList data are entered daily, following up with teachers as necessary
  • Respond to student violations of school policies related to behavior including but not limited to technology misuse, uniform, electronics, missed class time, HallPass violations, and use of harmful language
  • Oversee and lead systems for uniforms and free dress
  • Plan and lead Phoenix Society meetings
  • Manage Phoenix [student] of the Week process, including voting process, data review, and student/family-facing communications
  • Hold restorative conversations with students who face behavioral challenges, and ensure students and teachers to engage in similar restorative conversations and actions when needed; engaging families in partnership to support students as appropriate
  • Support the design, implementation, and monitoring of individual student behavior intervention plans including student “scorecards”
  • Oversee student referral processes: reflection, DOS check in, back-to-class activities
  • Investigate incidents and coordinate follow up
  • Manage and coordinate restorative follow up or disciplinary action: restorative chats, assignments, conferences, ISS protocols
  • Coordinate lunchtime and afterschool reflection processes
  • Leads the Dean’s Office to ensure effective implementation of all culture systems and policies
  • Support continuous growth of school program through identifying school-wide challenges and working towards solutions
  • Give and receive honest and direct feedback to improve your practice, that of your peers, and school leaders
  • Create and maintain open, honest, and respectful lines of communication with all stakeholders
  • Attend and participate in school-wide events including Back to School Night, Parent/Teacher conferences, End of the Year events, Grade Level Meetings, Department Meetings, Summer Professional Development, weekly Professional Development during the school year, and other assigned meetings.
  • Demonstrate proficient use of technology to communicate with staff, families, and community members using multiple school-based platforms.
  • Utilize Educational Technology platforms for curriculum development and planning.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Principal or an administrator.
  • Demonstrate regular and consistent attendance in order to perform essential functions of the role.
  • Collaborate with staff and leadership to continuously improve practices and address student needs effectively.
  • Foster open and respectful communication, offering and receiving constructive feedback to enhance personal and team performance.
  • Set and hold high expectations for academics and behavior.
  • Develop trusting, authentic relationships with students and their families.
