This role may be filled at the Sr. Engineer or Engineer III level based on experience and qualifications. The preferred location for this position is Charlotte, NC. However, depending on the selected candidate’s location, the hiring manager may also consider seating this position in Raleigh, NC, or St. Petersburg, FL. This role will primarily support the residential and non-residential demand response programs. Strong preference will be given to those with previous demand response experience. This role will also provide limited support to the energy efficiency programs and assist with standardization and optimization efforts across Duke Energy’s EE/DR portfolio. Position Summary The Demand Response Engineer is at the crossroads of our demand response programs, customers, and support vendors. You should be passionate about working with customers and stakeholders to develop strategic recommendations around demand response programs and technologies. Duke Energy offers many Demand Response programs to help customers shift their usage in their homes, businesses, and communities away from grid peaks while also improving grid stability and reducing carbon emissions. The Demand Response Engineer has a key role in supporting continuous improvement of these programs. The engineer will become fluent in peak load shedding strategies and implementation, estimating customer energy savings, develop up-to-date knowledge of underlying equipment/building codes and standards, and stay abreast of best practices in the industry and among utility peers. The role will keep meticulous records and perform ongoing verification of planning assumptions to improve confidence in projections and support Demand Response innovation. The position interacts closely with Demand Response program managers, analytics, and other key internal stakeholders. While prior experience in Demand Response programs and technology is not required, we are looking for someone with a strong interest in learning building science, appliance-based loads and specifications, DER technologies, and software platforms that work with all the above. The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision.

Requirements

  • Engineer III Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • In addition to bachelor’s degree, four (4) years minimum of engineering experience
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • Senior Engineer Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE
  • In addition to bachelor’s degree, six (6) years minimum of engineering experience OR five (5) years minimum of engineering experience with PE
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

Nice To Haves

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
  • PE License, CEM, CDSM, and/or LC certification.
  • Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.
  • Demonstrated the advancement and application of engineering theories and principles.
  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in building science and technology.

Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.
  • Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decisions that may affect the work of the team.
  • Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies.
  • Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies.
  • Effectively coordinates with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintains positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities across Duke Energy territories.
  • Identifies threats and opportunities for customer preferences and program design in the service regions.
  • Works with internal stakeholders to effectively communicate and attack the threats and opportunities identified.
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Maintains accurate records and files and supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
