Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of Dental Assistant Technical or Vocational Education
  • 3+ years Related Experience
  • State Issued Radiographer’s License
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Dental Assisting National Boards Certificate or the Certified Ohio Dental Assistant (CODA) Certificate
  • Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Certificate (where that is the primary anesthesia)

Nice To Haves

  • State Issued Certificate for Sealants and/or Coronal Polishing
  • Certified Orthodontic Assistant

Responsibilities

  • Participate In Improving Organizational Performance - Recommend areas or approaches for improvement activities, perform new procedures, collect data and provide input to department discussions.
  • Perform Additional Patient Care Procedures - Apply sealants or perform coronal polishing on appropriately assigned patients within the scope of the state certification limits. Fit, adjust impression trays, impress for study models, and take wax bite records. Remove, adjust and retie arch wires following the direction of the dentist. Try-in, fit and adjust bands. Assist dentist in cementation of bands and bonding procedures.
  • Patient Records - Record pertinent patient information in electronic dental record. May also serve as a scribe for the dentists in situations where the dentist is otherwise occupied in the direct care of the patient. When functioning in this capacity, the assistant will not be engaged in direct patient care and will serve only as the recorder of the specific comments directed by the dentist for inclusion in the medical record, without interpretation or modification.
  • Assist Patient And Parent - Anticipate, greet and seat patient. Instruct patient about pre and post- operative needs and issues. Instruct patient in oral hygiene and fluoride treatment.
  • Prepare Equipment and Instruments for Each Use - Assemble trays. Maintain hand pieces. Stock each room. Set up, clean and disinfect operatory.
  • Take And Develop X-Rays - Take and develop X-rays including, panorex, bite wing, occlusal film, cephs, and CBCT scans. Maintain X-ray processor.
  • Assist Doctor with Dental Procedures - Monitor patients, including those on nitrous oxide or narcotics. Take blood pressure and pulse. Monitor respiration, mucosal color and consciousness. Use suction devices, water spray, cotton rolls and holders; retract cheek and tongue. Assist with the management and calming of patients. Use papoose boards and mouth props. Reassure anxious patients. Prepare local anesthetic. Apply and remove plaque disclosure. Mix restorative material, take primary impression using correct disinfection method appropriate to material. Pour impression and trim to suit patient.
