SUMMARY Under general supervision, the Dentist Assistant is responsible for supporting the Dentist and Dental Hygienist in delivering high-quality dental care and treatment to the people we support at ADAPT Community Network. The Dental Assistant plays a key role in ensuring that clinical operations run efficiently and that all equipment and facilities are maintained in a sanitary and compliant manner consistent with regulatory requirements and agency standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; additional technical dental training beyond high school preferred.
  • At least one year of relevant dental assisting experience required, preferably working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively and compassionately with coworkers, individuals served, and their families.
  • Working knowledge of dental tools, equipment, and instruments used in clinical practice.
  • Proficiency in performing manual tasks requiring attention to detail and fine motor coordination.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment within established policies and guidelines.
  • Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of infection control, safety, and patient care.
  • Passion for ADAPT Community Network’s mission and the nonprofit sector.

Nice To Haves

  • New York State Dental Assistant Certification preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Prepare dental treatment rooms for daily use, ensuring all equipment, materials, and instruments are clean, organized, and ready for patient care.
  • Assist the Dentist and Dental Hygienist during examinations and procedures, providing clinical and chairside support as required.
  • Sanitize all work surfaces, treatment areas, and the dental laboratory in accordance with infection control and safety protocols.
  • Sterilize, package, and store dental instruments following established procedures and regulatory guidelines.
  • Process, label, and file dental x-rays and related diagnostic materials in patient charts or electronic records.
  • Maintain proper inventory of supplies and materials; notify supervisor of equipment repairs, maintenance needs, or items requiring replenishment.
  • Collaborate professionally with dental laboratories and vendors supporting the clinic’s operations.
  • Interact courteously and effectively with individuals served, their families, and interdisciplinary team members, ensuring a welcoming and supportive environment.
  • Participate in departmental in-service trainings and continuing education activities to stay current with best practices and emerging technologies in dental care.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient records and information in accordance with HIPAA and agency policies.
  • Remain current with changes in the field of dentistry and infection control standards.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
