About The Position

Deputy Clerk is a division staff member working under the direction and guidance of the Chief Deputy Clerk. This position is full-time and includes comprehensive health benefits, paid vacation time and sick leave, and thirteen paid holidays per year. This position's salary is $44,125 per year. The Deputy Clerk has immediate administrative and clerical responsibilities related to daily case filings and case management, weekly docket proceedings, general public inquiries, acceptance of payments and issuance of receipts, and specific assigned job duties and responsibilities. The Court’s schedule is from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and extensive experience as a deputy court clerk, paralegal, or legal secretary
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, and practices of the civil division of the office of the clerk of courts
  • Thorough knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic
  • Ability to operate office, word processing, and data entry equipment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with court staff, court officials, associations, attorneys, law enforcement officers, and the public

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a paralegal or college degree with major course work in criminal justice, business, public administration, or related field desirable

  • Accept and process payments on judgments
  • Regular case management and communication with the judgment creditor
  • Accept daily filings of complaints and fees

  • Schedule hearings for Magistrates/RITA officials
  • File and process Magistrate Reports/rulings
  • Process and journalize judgment entries through adjudication
  • Post-judgment filings – garnishments, attachments, liens, examinations, levies, etc.
  • Accept payments on judgments, receipt and process distributions
  • Answer calls, identify the nature of the call, and direct it to the correct person or division
  • Assist in jury selection process
  • Prepare juror letters and examinations
  • Receive and process miscellaneous petitions
  • Miscellaneous job responsibilities assigned by Chief Deputy Clerk
  • Accept filings and create cases as required by Ohio Revised Code
  • Receive, receipt and deposit rent payments
  • Deposit, balance, and reconcile banking responsibilities
  • Notification of status to interest parties, e.g., landlord and tenant
  • Scheduling of court proceedings notification
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures as outlined in the Lakewood Municipal Court Employee Handbook
  • Work the general counter to accept filings and assist the public as needed
  • Answer the phones and direct calls to proper areas and persons
  • Timestamp incoming USPS mail and daily filings
  • Prepare certified copies of court records as required
  • Total and complete daily deposit slips for monies receipted
  • Departmental mail is received daily and distributed accordingly
  • Outgoing mail is processed and delivered to the Post Office daily
