About the position

You’re a designer who doesn’t just sketch pretty things, you bring them to life. You think in form, function, and feasibility. You lead brainstorms that actually spark ideas. You present concepts with clarity and conviction. You’re here to raise the bar. At Uncommon Goods, we create joyful, design-forward objects—from clever kitchen tools to conversation-starting home goods. We’re looking for a Product Designer with an industrial design background to contribute to new product development.

Responsibilities

  • Concept, prototype, and develop exclusive products from idea to final production.
  • Participate in brainstorming and pitch new ideas to product development and merchandising teams.
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders (buyers, sourcing, creative, ops) to ensure your designs are not just beautiful—but viable.
  • Oversee the full design process—from mood boards and sketching to CAD, specs, pre-production approvals, and launch.
  • Maintain a sharp POV on trends, customer behavior, and commercial viability.

Requirements

  • 4-6 years of experience in industrial design, consumer goods, or lifestyle product development.
  • Fluency in CAD tools (SolidWorks, Rhino, or Fusion 360) and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong communicator—visually and verbally—with the ability to defend ideas and influence decisions.
  • Portfolio that shows full lifecycle design work: from sketch to shelf, with real-world production and impact.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working knowledge of manufacturing (overseas or domestic), packaging, and sourcing.
  • Passion for sustainability, values-based design, or storytelling through product.

Benefits

  • Subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Free, confidential, 1-on-1 coaching.
  • 401K matching.
  • Education subsidy of up to $5250 for college coursework or professional training.
  • Eight hours of paid time off each year for volunteering.
  • Commuter benefits including pretax discounts for public transportation and discounted Citi Bike memberships.
  • 40% team member discount on goods.
  • Generous paid time off and supplemental New York State Short Term Disability and Paid Family Leave.
  • Casual work environment with comfortable clothing.
  • Open book policy sharing financial results with the team.
  • Collaborative environment welcoming talents and insights.
