About The Position

The University of Mary Washington has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Digital Accessibility Coordinator. The Digital Accessibility Coordinator serves as the institution’s operational lead for digital accessibility compliance, with primary responsibility for coordinating the university’s conformance with the U.S. Department of Justice’s ADA Title II accessibility rules for covered web content and mobile applications. The role provides university-wide governance, consultation, training, and implementation support, and establishes sustainable processes to assess, remediate, and prevent accessibility barriers in digital content, software, and services. The position also aligns with the Commonwealth’s approach to naming a digital accessibility coordinator and maintaining a visible reporting pathway for digital accessibility barriers, including developing and implementing a digital accessibility policy and procedures for reviewing/responding to barrier reports.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of digital accessibility standards and compliance frameworks, including WCAG/Section 508/ADA-related requirements
  • Proven program management and compliance leadership experience, including policy development, governance, and process design
  • Skill in accessibility assessment, auditing, and remediation planning
  • Ability to provide technical consulting and coordinate remediation across units
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of privileged information and adhere to applicable privacy laws
  • Strong ability to develop and deliver role-based training and support
  • Minimum of three years of experience in digital accessibility, web/content governance, instructional technology, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience applying WCAG standards and assistive technology testing practices
  • Experience with accessible procurement processes and reviews (e.g., VPAT/ACR evaluation)
  • Excellent leadership, communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
  • Bachelor’s degree

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in disability and accessibility services, instructional design/technology, or a related field
  • Demonstrated commitment to accessibility and a strong understanding of accessibility-related issues
  • Understanding of Universal Design for Learning and instructional design
  • Knowledge of digital tools for teaching and learning
  • Experience with Canvas LMS, YuJa Panorama, ScreenPal, or Microsoft Office/Microsoft 365
  • Certifications in any of the following: IAAP CPACC and/or WAS / CPWA (or equivalent)
  • Experienced in leading projects and teams
  • Experience with assistive technology, including (but not limited to) screen readers, screen magnification software, speech to text tools, and alternative input devices
  • Experience using common accessibility evaluation tools and testing for accessibility barriers
  • Skilled in PDF accessibility including document creation and remediation
