About The Position

I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG), a science and technical services company supporting the U.S. Federal Government, is seeking a Digital Content Specialist to support NOAA’s National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) in Silver Spring, Maryland. This position is embedded within the NOAA Environmental Visualization Laboratory (VizLab), a multidisciplinary team with expertise spanning science communications, data visualization, graphic design, education, software development, and systems engineering. The successful candidate will provide communications support to the NESDIS Headquarters Communications Team, with primary responsibility for science writing, editorial support, and social media content that communicates NESDIS science, satellite missions, and environmental data to internal and external audiences. The role also includes video editing work focused on short form informational content using existing satellite imagery and visualization assets. This is an onsite position at NESDIS Headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Requirements

  • Ability to work onsite in a fast-paced office environment at NESDIS Headquarters
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with demonstrated ability to adapt tone and complexity for diverse audiences
  • Strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in AP style
  • Experience with web content management systems such as Drupal
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience editing digital content using Adobe Creative Cloud tools including Acrobat and video editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro
  • U.S. Citizenship is required for this position.
  • Bachelor’s degree in writing, journalism, communications, environmental science, or a related field
  • Five or more years of professional experience in science communication, technical writing, or digital communications

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with NOAA, Earth science, satellite data, or weather satellites
  • Experience editing short form informational videos using existing satellite imagery or data visualizations
  • Comfort working with scientific imagery and data driven stories and visuals

Responsibilities

  • Write, edit, and produce high quality written content including web features, program highlights, monthly newsletters, and internal and external communications
  • Translate complex scientific and technical information into clear, accessible, and engaging narratives for broad audiences, including NOAA leadership, partners, and the public
  • Collaborate with NOAA scientists, engineers, and subject matter experts to ensure technical accuracy and clarity
  • Review and edit content to ensure alignment with NESDIS editorial standards, NOAA style guidance, and AP style
  • Support leadership by preparing or editing materials for academic, industry, and congressional audiences as needed
  • Develop and publish engaging social media content for platforms including YouTube, X, Facebook, Instagram, and related NOAA channels
  • Plan and execute social media campaigns in coordination with NESDIS and NOAA wide communications teams
  • Leverage platform specific features such as visual storytelling, short videos, and timely content to foster engagement
  • Monitor and analyze performance metrics and adjust content strategies based on insights and best practices
  • Create short form informational video and multimedia content using existing satellite imagery, animations, data visualizations, and other NESDIS approved assets
  • Research scientific topics and mission concepts in collaboration with NESDIS subject matter experts to identify clear, accurate storytelling angles
  • Draft scripts and accompanying text that translate complex scientific and technical information into accessible narratives for general audiences
  • Coordinate closely with scientists, engineers, and program staff to validate scientific accuracy and messaging
  • Edit video content using professional editing software to produce polished, visually coherent clips optimized for websites and social media platforms
  • Assemble imagery loops, captions, simple motion treatments, and on screen text to support public understanding of weather, climate, and Earth observation topics
  • Ensure all multimedia products adhere to NESDIS editorial standards, NOAA communications guidance, and accessibility requirements
  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a fast paced, multidisciplinary communications team
  • Participate in regular planning meetings, editorial discussions, and brainstorming sessions
  • Coordinate closely with VizLab designers, developers, and communicators to ensure cohesive messaging and visuals
  • Occasional travel for conferences or mission related activities may be required
