About The Position

The Directional Drill Operator is responsible for operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install underground conduit and fiber infrastructure for telecommunications projects. This role works closely with the HDD Locator and ground crew to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient drilling operations while maintaining productivity, quality, and safety standards.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as an HDD Operator in telecom, utility, or underground construction
  • Experience operating HDD rigs (e.g., Vermeer, Ditch Witch, Toro, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of HDD drilling methods and bore planning
  • Ability to read and interpret prints and bore profiles
  • Knowledge of underground utility locating and damage prevention
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to lift up to 75–100 lbs as required
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work on uneven terrain
  • Ability to work long hours, weekends, and travel as needed

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in telecom fiber and conduit installation
  • CDL (Class A or B)
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
  • Experience with rock drilling and mixed ground conditions

Responsibilities

  • Operate HDD equipment to perform underground bores for telecom conduit and fiber installation
  • Work closely with the Locator to maintain proper bore path, depth, and alignment
  • Read and interpret bore profiles, prints, and utility maps
  • Ensure all utilities are properly located and verified prior to drilling
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance
  • Monitor drilling conditions and adjust techniques as needed
  • Ensure proper setup and breakdown of drill equipment
  • Assist with potholing, exposing utilities, and verifying utility conflicts
  • Install conduit, innerduct, and other underground infrastructure
  • Follow all safety protocols, OSHA guidelines, and company policies
  • Participate in daily job briefings and safety meetings
  • Maintain production goals while prioritizing job site safety
  • Complete required job documentation and reporting
