About The Position

The Director of Audio Systems is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and implementation of the production and ancillary audio systems within Sphere’s diverse venue. This role oversees in-house mixing, recording, system programming, and collaboration with Sphere Studios and outside productions for new shows. Responsibilities may include pre-production meetings with Sphere Studios and guest productions to guide them through the processes and infrastructure necessary for success at Sphere.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in audio design, technology, and engineering for film, television, live events, and/or themed entertainment.
  • Technical knowledge of production audio systems, including Ravenna, Dante, AES67, digital audio consoles, D-Mitri, Q-Sys, Lawo, SMPTE 2110, AV networks, clocking, DAWs, Waves, and spatial audio.
  • Completion of a minimum of 60 college-level credit hours (equivalent to 2 years) or equivalent self-development through certifications, trade school coursework, etc. Educational requirements may vary by role.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with financial and operational implications across departments and venues in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience supervising and working with both Union and Non-Union crews.
  • Experience creating and maintaining event budgets and preparing financial information for settlements.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, reasoning, motivational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound business judgment.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts in a time-sensitive manner while maintaining positive, professional relationships.

  • Required to have completed the OSHA 30-Hour training course

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Vice President of Technical Productions to develop and execute standard operating procedures for operating, programming, and maintaining Sphere’s audio systems, equipment, and infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with production managers to schedule and manage IATSE 720 stagehand audio crews, ensuring efficient labor deployment for daily audio operations.
  • Collaborate with MSG Ventures Audio and visiting production crews to manage technical advances and ensure successful shows.
  • Manage the installation of additional audio equipment within the venue according to event specifications.
  • Oversee the rental, deployment, and proper care of third-party equipment with Sphere partners to support special events.
  • Operate audio systems during events and act as Technical Manager on Duty as needed, overseeing all production systems.
  • Manage maintenance and repair of audio equipment to minimize downtime and optimize performance.
  • Troubleshoot event-day issues promptly, demonstrating responsiveness and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
  • Oversee transitions from load-in to day-of-event activities and through load-out for assigned events.
  • Supervise the operation, programming, and maintenance of playback and specialty audio systems.
  • Manage archival files of all productions, including Sphere-developed custom content and audio system files.
  • Track costs against event, programming, and maintenance budgets.
  • Collaborate with manufacturers, including Holoplot and MSG Ventures, on the development of new software and hardware to meet Sphere’s unique needs.
  • Supervise Audio Managers, Technicians, Operators, and Programmers.
