About The Position

ezCater is the leading food for work technology company in the US, connecting anyone who needs food for their workplace to over 100,000 restaurants nationwide. For workplaces, ezCater provides flexible and scalable solutions for everything from recurring employee meals to one-off meetings, all backed by 24/7 customer service with real humans. ezCater also enables companies to manage their food spend in a single, customizable platform. For restaurant partners, ezCater helps them grow their business by bringing them more orders and new high-value customers. We're backed by top investors including Insight, Iconiq, Lightspeed, GIC, SoftBank, and Quadrille. As the Director of Data Platforms at ezCater, you will play a critical role in leading the accelerated modernization and unification of our core data infrastructure as well as build a first-class practice around data governance, and business data modeling - over the course of the next 12 to 18 months, as part our broader technology transformation strategy, and to ensure scalability, reliability, and alignment with business objectives Your primary focus will be evolving our data ecosystem and core data disciplines —encompassing governance, real-time event streaming, AI/ML enablement, and analytics pipelines— in addition to facilitating the data strategy around our marketplace platform transformation (from monolith to microservices) which will require seamless integrations of master data, operational, transactional and behavioral data into the architecture.. You will drive urgent systemic improvements in data quality and governance within the first year, instituting rigorous data quality standards and developing canonical business data models that mirror our operating environment, creating a trusted foundation for decision-making. By unifying technologies and enabling self-service analytics, you’ll empower teams across Product, Growth, and Finance to act on insights while maintaining architectural integrity across Salesforce, NetSuite, and AI tooling. Leading 20+ engineers across six pods, you’ll partner with the Director of Analytics to execute a high-velocity data strategy that scales with our business – processing millions of orders through resilient platforms while embedding governance and business context into every layer of our data ecosystem.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in data engineering, infrastructure, or platform roles, with 5+ years leading high-performance teams in fast-paced environments.
  • Proven expertise in modern data architectures: Lakehouses, real-time streaming (Kafka/Pulsar), microservices integration, and cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure).
  • Business-data modeling expertise with formal business analysis skills to design canonical models that mirror operational realities, coupled with governance frameworks and training methodologies.
  • Track record of solving data quality challenges through governance, metadata management, and workflow automation.
  • Experience scaling AI/ML platforms (e.g., Sagemaker, Vertex AI, MLflow) as enablers for broader teams, not primary model builders.
  • Strong knowledge of data governance frameworks, data catalog tools (e.g., Collibra, Alation), and compliance standards.
  • Technical fluency in SQL, Python, Spark, Terraform, and containerization (Kubernetes).
  • Strategic mindset with experience driving accelerated platform transformations and technology consolidation.
  • Exceptional collaboration skills with engineering, product, and business stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Define and execute data platform strategy through a 2-3 year roadmap that unifies architecture, minimizes tech sprawl, and integrates with our marketplace replatforming (evolving from monolith to microservices).
  • Establish enterprise data quality standards by overhauling governance frameworks, metadata management, and compliance protocols (e.g. GDPR/CCPA) to rebuild trust in data assets.
  • Implement business data modeling practices by developing canonical models, semantic layers, and business glossaries that accurately reflect our operating environment, supported by governance and stakeholder education.
  • Operate all core data platforms including our Data Hub (employing the Medallion architecture), Events Platform (e.g. Kafka/Rudderstack), and AI/ML infrastructure, ensuring reliability, cost efficiency, and real-time capabilities.
  • Enable AI/ML adoption across teams by building platform capabilities (feature stores, model pipelines) while maintaining governance – without direct model development.
  • Activate data for business impact in partnership with the Director of Analytics, creating single-source-of-truth metrics and self-service tooling for Product, Growth, Finance, and Operations.
  • Lead 20+ engineers across 6 functional teams through mentorship, talent development, and cross-functional collaboration to scale our data practice.
