About The Position

As Director, Executive Communications, you’ll have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by helping advance the goals of USGBC and GBCI. In this role, you’ll take ownership of leading strategic communications for the USGBC executive office, supporting the CEO and departmental leaders with internal and external communications across multiple formats and channels. This position is instrumental in refining executive communications strategy, elevating the voice of organizational leaders, highlighting USGBC’s industry and thought leadership, and strengthening USGBC’s communication of its mission, brand, and value to global stakeholders and communities. You’ll report to the Director of Corporate Communications and work closely with USGBC’s Chief of Staff. The successful candidate will be an experienced and effective communicator capable of developing targeted messaging for business leaders, policymakers and diverse community members across sectors and regions. This role interfaces with senior organizational leaders and requires collaboration with cross-functional teams and partners, strategic and creative thinking, and the highest level of professionalism and integrity.

Requirements

  • 6+ yearsof professional experience in executive communications in a corporate/organizational environment
  • Building industry or corporate sustainability experience, preferably in a product-centric organization
  • Technical competency and experience developing issues-driven campaigns
  • Demonstrated experience as an executive speech writer developing narratives/messaging for the CEO or CSO in business-to-business environments
  • Ability to synthesize complex information and produce clear and compelling narratives
  • Experience developing and executing strategic communications plans
  • Solid understanding of key drivers in the green building sector, including efforts to decarbonize buildings, advance resilience, enable greater energy security, and provide health and equity for all
  • Intuition and understanding of how to communicate effectively with diverse global audiences and stakeholders
  • Ability tooperatein a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Proven ability to build cross-functional relationships

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or relatedfield. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of an office computer and MicrosoftOffice Suite

  • Excellent relationship management and personal communication skills
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Exceptional written and visual storytelling skills, including success developing keynote speeches/presentations for business and/or nonprofit executives

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the principal writer and messaging strategist supporting the CEO and departmental leaders (such as the Chief Products Officer and Chief Growth Officer) with presentations and speeches, articles and announcements, panel discussions, interviews, videos, and correspondence.
  • Collaborate with the social media manager to help boost the digital profile of the CEO and other C-suite leaders.
  • Craft engaging, impactful, audience-specific narratives that reflect the voice of USGBC leaders and advance the organization’s mission, position,work and influence.
  • Develop and implement executive communications strategies aligned with broader USGBC marketing and communications goals and industry trends.
  • Conduct research and consult internal and external experts and sources to gather relevant background and insights to inform executive communications.
  • Ensure mission, vision, and brand identity consistency across all deliverables and channels.
