About The Position

The Director of Fleet Safety is responsible for overseeing all private fleet safety and driver training programs. The role manages the annual safety budget, ensures performance targets for accident rates, ensures that Dollar General Private Fleet is compliant and meets federal, state, and local requirements, and drives continuous improvements to reduce safety risk.

Requirements

  • In-depth knowledge of Federal Motors Carriers Safety Administration, Department of Transportation, and Compliance Safety Accountability (CSA) Program.
  • Must understand paper and electronic logs, Hours of Service, and SMITH System.
  • Strong ability to lead, develop, and coach a team of people.
  • Strong written communications, oral communications, project management and presentation skills.
  • Ability to think strategically, tactically, be detail oriented, and fiscally responsible across the company portfolio.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment
  • Broad general knowledge of systems and technology related to driver management, safety, and compliance.
  • Flexible work hours
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
  • Up to 50% Travel
  • A bachelor’s degree is required, with an equivalent combination of education and experience considered. Requires a minimum of 8–10+ years of professional experience, including at least five years in a leadership role within the transportation, logistics, or supply chain industry and 2–3 years directing large‑scale safety operations.

  • Experience in a multi‑site transportation support environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of private fleet safety and training programs across all Fleet locations
  • Direct the annual Fleet Safety budget and ensure monthly targets for accidents per million miles, lost time injuries, and safety cost per mile are achieved.
  • Reduce overall safety risk through ongoing analysis, coaching, and program improvements to minimize injuries, accidents, equipment/property damage, and adhering to the drug and alcohol policies at all times.
  • Create, manage, and implement safety KPIs and scorecards ensuring best-in-class performance related to CSA scores, DOT audits, accident frequency, and overall FMCSA safety ratings.
  • Lead in developing a best‑in‑industry safety culture grounded in accountability, continuous improvement, and compliance excellence, while overseeing the implementation and ongoing enhancement of SMITH System Training, Close Quarter Maneuvering training, and completion of Professional Development Plans (PDPs).
  • Lead all team development, diversity, and performance management.
  • Provide direct leadership to Sr. Safety Managers and ensure Supervisors and Regional Safety Managers are held accountable for driver orientation, on the job training, accident review processes, and remedial safety training.
  • Build strong working relationships with drivers, site leaders, Fleet Maintenance, tractor/trailer manufactures, and safety technology partners.
  • Hire develop and conduct performance and development reviews for Sr. Safety Managers.
  • Manage workload distribution, provide coaching, and ensure growth opportunities through structured development plans.
  • Lead overall safety technology strategy, vision and implementation.
  • Lead strategy for safety technology platforms including Safety direct, First Advantage, WhipAround, Luma Learning, Idelic, SMITH Systems, and future partners.
  • Continuously evaluate emerging technologies, data analytics tools, and best practices to strengthen safety performance and reduce incident rates.
  • Ensure technology solutions are consistently utilized across the fleet and deliver measurable safety outcomes.
