About The Position

Under general direction of the Associate Superintendent, Chief Business Officer, provides the district with safe, clean, attractively maintained and educationally adequate physical facilities at all sites; supervises, plans and coordinates the activities and operations of the MOT Division within the Business Services Department; and coordinates assigned activities with other divisions, outside agencies, and the general public.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with major coursework in construction, engineering, architecture, industrial technology, or a related field, and/or ten years of master-level experience in a construction trade.
  • Five years of responsible experience in building maintenance, construction and engineering including three years of supervisory experience.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid driver's license.
  • Physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to write, use telephone, business machines and equipment including computers.
  • Vision sufficient to read printed material.
  • Hear sufficiently so as to be able to conduct (communicate) in person and telephone conversations.
  • Speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in a normal conversational distance and on the telephone.
  • Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, and to reach overhead.
  • Physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment; drive an automobile, and respond to emergency situations.
  • Physical strength sufficient to lift twenty-five (25) pounds.
  • Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.
  • Knowledge of operational characteristics, services, and activities of a comprehensive maintenance, operations, and transportation program.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in a variety of mechanical, technical, and building trades, building and grounds maintenance, vehicle and equipment maintenance, and repair work.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of engineering applicable to school construction, remodeling, rehabilitation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the assigned area of work.
  • Knowledge of principles of budget preparation and control.
  • Knowledge of principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations including the sections of Uniform Building Code affecting the construction, modification, and repair of school buildings and applicable sections of the Education Code and Public Contract Code.
  • Knowledge of effective written and oral communication using correct English and grammar skills.
  • Knowledge of planning, organizing, supervising and reporting work/projects involving equipment and materials.
  • Skill to operate a wide variety of equipment and tools used in a variety of trades involved in maintenance, operations, and transportation functions in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ability to prepare and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Ability to perform engineering work in the design and layout of school building alterations and construction projects.
  • Ability to perform inspections of school structures and construction.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply a wide variety of technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • Ability to analyze cost data and statistical information for the development of administrative controls and records.
  • Ability to direct, coordinate, inspect and supervise maintenance, grounds, custodians, and construction projects.
  • Ability to prepare written estimates concerning labor and material costs.
  • Ability to respond to requests and inquiries from the public.
  • Ability to perform a wide range of professional, administrative, advocacy and liaison duties involved in facility maintenance and construction process.
  • Ability to work effectively with district administrators and representatives of a wide variety of public agencies, community groups and private industry.
  • Ability to establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the organization, staffing, and operational activities for the MOT Division including facilities, vehicle maintenance, transportation, building and equipment maintenance, custodial, and grounds maintenance operations.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the MOT Division; identifies resource needs; recommends and implements policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of District policies and regulations regarding school facilities.
  • Selects, trains, supervises and evaluates all Maintenance, Transportation, Custodial and Grounds employees; provides or coordinates staff training.
  • Directs, coordinates, and reviews the work plan for the MOT Division; meets with staff to identify and resolve problems, assigns work activities and projects; monitors workflow; reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures
  • Informs and coordinates with school principals and appropriate staff at all facilities and plans department activities on school sites.
  • Participates in the development and administration of the assigned budget; forecasts additional funds expenditures; recommends adjustments as necessary.
  • Coordinates and participates in the design and application of engineering plans and specifications for the construction, remodeling, modernization, and maintenance of district facilities and grounds.
  • Prepares and reviews labor and cost estimates for construction, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Supervises and coordinates hazardous materials, asbestos, and safety programs.
  • Manages the organization, staffing, and operational activities for a small transportation program including vehicle maintenance.
  • Responds to emergency calls.
  • Serves as school building construction inspector, as required.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
