About The Position

The Director, Mechanical Procurement is responsible for leading all strategic sourcing and supplier management activities in support of the company’s mechanical operations, including railcar and locomotive components, maintenance, and repair services and mechanical facilities across all Genesee & Wyoming regions and subsidiary railroads. This role serves as the primary subject matter expert for mechanical procurement, balancing long-term sourcing strategy with day-to-day execution, governance, and operational support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or a minimum of seven years of related procurement and/or supply chain experience, preferably in support of mechanical operations in the rail industry.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Sourcing & Category Leadership In coordination with Procurement and Mechanical regional and railroad leadership, develop and execute category strategies for mechanical spend, including railcar components, locomotive components, MRO materials, outsourced repairs, and mechanical facility services.
  • Lead supplier sourcing activities including RFPs, RFQs, negotiations, and contract award recommendations.
  • Identify and drive cost optimization, value creation, and risk mitigation initiatives aligned with mechanical reliability and operational uptime.
  • Establish sourcing strategies that balance short-term operational needs with long‑-term‑ supply continuity and total cost of ownership.
  • Supplier Management & Commercial Governance Serve as the primary commercial liaison for mechanical suppliers.
  • Lead supplier performance management, including cost, quality, delivery, service, and compliance metrics.
  • Manage contract lifecycle activities, including contract development, renewals, amendments, and enforcement of commercial terms.
  • Identify and address supplier risks related to capacity, quality, financial stability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Procurement Operations & Transactional Oversight As a procurement systems expert, provide oversight and support for requisition and purchase order processing, including: Review, correction, and finalization of requisitions and POs Ensuring pricing accuracy, contractual alignment, and policy compliance Resolving issues that could delay material availability or services Identifying, addressing, and/or troubleshooting procurement system-related issues Act as the escalation point for complex or high-‑impact procurement issues affecting mechanical operations.
  • Partner with Accounts Payable to resolve invoice discrepancies and payment issues tied to mechanical spend.
  • Subject Matter Expertise & Stakeholder Partnership Serve as the recognized internal expert on mechanical procurement, supplier markets, and commercial best practices.
  • Serve as an internal expert and resource in addressing procurement system issues, concerns, and training needs.
  • Partner closely with Mechanical leaders at the regional and railroad level to understand and address demand drivers, maintenance strategies, emerging needs, and supplier/supply chain deficiencies.
  • Provide cross-functional support, guidance, and mentorship to procurement staff.
  • Support audits, regulatory reviews, and internal controls related to procurement activities.
  • Process Improvement & Systems Drive continuous improvement in procurement processes, tools, and controls related to mechanical sourcing and purchasing.
  • Ensure consistent application of procurement policies and governance standards.
  • Support enhancements to ERP, sourcing, or contract management systems as they relate to mechanical procurement and procurement processes more broadly.
