About The Position

The Director, Cleanroom & Nanofabrication Facility oversees the daily operation, strategic planning, and general oversight and management of the Boston College Cleanroom & Nanofabrication Facility. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure that the Cleanroom & Nanofabrication Facility operates efficiently while maintaining the highest standards to optimize the research productivity and educational opportunities for BC students, faculty, staff, visiting researchers, external users. The Director is responsible for all instrumentation present in the Cleanroom & Nanofabrication Facility, support of design, processing, and fabrication in the facility, lab safety, training students, faculty, staff, visiting researchers, and external users in use of these resources, carrying out calibrations, assessment of data quality, and maintenance, including primary responsibility for diagnosing and trouble-shooting problems and arranging repairs, and participating in the scientific analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of data and items produced in the facility. The Director is also responsible for management of the facility budget including non-staff expenses, such as consumables and reagent ordering, as well as planning and implementation of cost recovery including recharge rate calculation and/or contracts with externals users, as appropriate. The Director must be capable of overseeing and participating in the operation of the Cleanroom & Nanofabrication Facility with little or no supervision. The Director will also be responsible for participation in strategic planning for the facility, contribution to the assessment of potential alternatives for instrument procurement, and marketing and user outreach. The Director must be capable of solving problems related to the operation of the major research instrumentation and of the operational components in the Cleanroom & Nanofabrication Facility. The Director must be able to work cooperatively with the multiple faculty members and other researchers across numerous departments and schools. The Director must have extensive working knowledge of Cleanroom operations & Nanofabrication instrumentation and laboratory procedures, and he/she must be knowledgeable of or capable of learning the operation of new instrumentation and sample preparation procedures both as needed by facility users and to institute novel capabilities available to BC faculty researchers.

Requirements

  • At least five years of experience in Cleanroom operations & Nanofabrication including a doctoral degree, or similar experience, in Chemical/Physical/Materials science or a related field with an emphasis on laboratory research is the minimum required.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional out of hours availability required in case issues emerge with instruments or users.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-3 additional years of postdoctoral experience in Nanofabrication or a related field is highly desirable.
  • One or more years of experience in core facility management is highly desirable.
