About The Position

The Director of Facilities is responsible for the strategic and day-to-day management of all facilities operations for both the Museum of Tolerance and the Simon Wiesenthal Center headquarters. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all building systems while maintaining an exceptional environment for visitors, staff and tenants. The Director of Facilities works closely with senior leadership, museum management, architects, consultants, and contractors to support the museum’s mission through best-in-class facilities management. Position reports to the Vice President of Operations and is based in Los Angeles, CA.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience considered.
  • 8+ years of progressive facilities management experience, preferably in a museum, cultural institution, corporate campus, or complex public facility.
  • Demonstrated experience managing building systems, capital projects, and exhibition or public-facing environments.
  • Proven leadership experience managing technical staff and external service providers.
  • Strong knowledge of building codes, life safety systems, and emergency preparedness.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and project management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Facilities Operations & Maintenance Oversee the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and performance of all building utility systems, including, but not limited to, HVAC, fire/life safety systems, mechanical systems, lighting control systems, elevators, plumbing, kitchen equipment, and related infrastructure.
  • Ensure all facilities operate safely, reliably, and in compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Oversee general maintenance and repair of museum and headquarters buildings, including landscaping, exterior areas, and overall building upkeep.
  • Maintain public spaces, exhibit floors, offices, and staff common areas to museum-quality standards.
  • Prepare annual budget for building operations and services. Update periodically as needed.
  • Review all vendor relationships and put out for RFP for service contracts on a regular routine basis. Look for areas of consolidation for various vendor agreements and seek volume discounts.
  • Visitor, Staff & Tenant Experience Partner with museum leadership and senior leadership to create and maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for visitors, staff, and tenants.
  • Coordinate with tenants on maintenance and repair needs in accordance with lease obligations and service level agreements.
  • Capital Projects & Exhibitions Coordinate with architects, engineers, consultants, and contractors in how they plan, design, and execute new exhibits, renovations, capital improvements, and tenant improvement projects to insure proper integration into our facilities
  • Provide facilities support during all phases of projects, from planning and budgeting through construction and closeout.
  • Minimize operational disruption during construction and exhibition installations.
  • Emergency Preparedness & Risk Management Maintain responsibility for the ongoing review, update, testing, and implementation of the organization’s emergency preparedness and disaster response plans.
  • In partnership with Director of Security, ensure readiness for emergencies including fire, power outages, severe weather, and other facility-related incidents.
  • Review all insurance programs to make sure all safeguards are in place and assets are properly protected.
  • Team Leadership Supervise and develop the in-house engineering and maintenance function.
  • Oversee outsourced janitorial and facilities-related service providers to ensure performance standards are met.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement within the facilities team.
  • Vendor & Contract Management Manage all facility-related vendor relationships, including the development and maintenance of a preferred vendor list.
  • Ensure vendor compliance with insurance, licensing, and contractual requirements.
  • Negotiate and manage service contracts to achieve high-quality service and cost efficiency.
