About The Position

Director of Finance The Tony Award–winning The Old Globe seeks an experienced and strategic Director of Finance to join its leadership team. Reporting to the Managing Director, this role will provide high-level financial leadership and oversee the theatre’s accounting, finance, and financial control functions. Located in the heart of Balboa Park, The Old Globe is one of the nation’s leading regional theatres. Each year, the Globe produces a wide range of productions—from Shakespeare and classic works to world premiere plays and musicals—across its three stages. With an annual operating budget approaching $40 million and serving more than 200,000 audience members annually, the Globe is San Diego’s largest arts institution and leading arts employer. Position Overview The Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization’s financial operations and ensuring the integrity and accuracy of financial reporting and systems. As a member of the senior leadership team, this role collaborates closely with the Managing Director, Artistic Director, and Board of Directors to support strategic planning and long-term financial sustainability. The Director of Finance will lead a departmental team comprised of an Accounting Manager, Accountant, Payroll Manager, and Accounts Payable/Accounting Assistant.

Requirements

  • Be a forward-thinking leader and administrator, with the ability to ensure and maintain integrity in all aspects of the theatre’s financial operations.
  • Have extensive knowledge and use of computerized accounting applications, database and spreadsheet software.
  • Possess the ability and perspective to evaluate and implement opportunities for improvements and efficiencies in financial administration, reporting, and analysis.
  • Have a genuine understanding of the “story behind the numbers”, and the judgment to interpret and analyze them in context of the theatre’s entire operations.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Be very well-organized, able to plan and manage strategically, set priorities and focus on details while not losing sight of the big picture, with the flexibility to welcome and embrace change, and the ability to balance the many challenges inherent in a dynamic, fast-paced theatre environment.
  • Have solid experience in managing, mentoring and motivating staff, and the ability to inspire those working with him/her toward accomplishing common objectives.
  • Be someone with initiative, creativity, energy, and a sense of humor, who enjoys working as a team player but also has the capability to work independently and as a self-starter.
  • Have a genuine interest in The Old Globe, and understand and support the theatre’s mission and values
  • Have, at minimum, a Baccalaureate degree in accounting or a related field.
  • At least seven to 10 years of professional experience gained in progressively senior positions, preferably in an arts or other nonprofit environment.
  • Must be able to pass applicable background check

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with the Tessitura enterprise software; the Paycom human resource software; and Blackbaud’s Financial Edge accounting program a plus.
  • A M.B.A. or equivalent graduate degree is preferred.
  • C.P.A. certification is a plus.
  • Experience with Tessitura, Paycom, and Blackbaud Financial Edge is a plus.
  • Capital campaign accounting experience a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all aspects of the theatre’s financial operations, including the establishment and operations of accounting systems and controls.
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of daily, monthly and annual financial activity.
  • Manage the preparation of the annual audit.
  • Fulfill government and grant source reporting requirements.
  • Manage operational and grant project budget planning, reporting, and forecasting.
  • Manage and report on organizational cash flow.
  • Provide financial advice and trend analysis to the Managing Director and Board of Directors.
  • Work with the Investment, Finance, Strategic Planning Committees, and the Board on all Finance related needs.
  • Work with investments advisors.
  • Work collaboratively with the other departments in the theatre.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise an effective, professional staff and recruits and replaces as necessary, in consultation with the theatre’s senior leadership.
  • Develop and implement work practices that support the Globe’s Social Justice Roadmap and commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and access in the workplace.
