About The Position

Forte Preparatory Academy is a college preparatory charter school serving students in Queens, New York. Our mission is to prepare all students to graduate from college and lead lives of purpose. We believe that rigorous academics, strong literacy instruction, and a deep engagement with history and literature are essential to that mission. Our humanities program is built on the belief that students should read complex texts, write frequently, and develop the analytical skills necessary to engage thoughtfully with ideas, arguments, and historical perspectives. As our school grows, we are seeking a Director of Humanities to ensure the strength and coherence of our English Language Arts and history programs across grades 5–12. The Director of Humanities is responsible for the strength, coherence, and implementation of Forte Prep’s humanities curriculum across middle and high school. This role oversees curriculum planning, supports the adoption and implementation of high-quality instructional materials, coaches teachers to strengthen instruction, and ensures that literacy development remains a central focus across grades. This position requires a leader who combines excellent teaching knowledge with exceptional organizational discipline. The Director must be able to manage complex curriculum systems, track instructional data closely, and translate that information into clear coaching priorities for teachers. The Director of Humanities reports to the Chief Schools Officer and works closely with school leaders and humanities teachers across both campuses.

Requirements

At least 5 years of teaching experience, preferably in English Language Arts
Demonstrated success as a classroom teacher with strong student outcomes
Prior experience coaching teachers or leading instructional improvement work
Demonstrated experience leading curriculum implementation or managing instructional initiatives across multiple teachers or grade levels
Deep knowledge of strong literacy instruction, including reading and writing development
Strong organizational and project management skills; ability to manage complex instructional systems and deliver consistently on deadlines
Ability to analyze instructional data and translate insights into concrete coaching actions
Exceptional reliability, follow-through, and attention to detail

Responsibilities

Lead the coordination and long-term planning of the ELA and history curriculum across grades 5–12
Drive the adoption and implementation of high-quality instructional materials, including Forte Prep’s Novel curriculum
Develop and maintain clear scope and sequence documents to ensure alignment and rigor across grade levels
Coordinate unit planning and assessment planning across teams to ensure coherence and alignment with Regents, AP, and state standards
Make strategic recommendations for curriculum improvements based on teacher feedback, student work, and performance data
Provide regular coaching to 4–6 humanities teachers through observation, feedback, and planning support
Help teachers strengthen instruction in reading, writing, discussion, and analytical thinking
Support teachers in the implementation of curriculum materials to ensure lessons are intellectually rigorous and well-structured
Model strong instructional practices and support teachers in refining their craft
Support the development of strong literacy practices across grades 5–12
Partner with school leaders and intervention staff to strengthen Tier 2 literacy supports for students who need additional support
Help ensure that intervention systems align with classroom instruction and accelerate student progress
Track and analyze student performance data, including Regents, AP, and state exam results
Use data to identify instructional priorities and guide coaching and curriculum decisions
Monitor student writing and reading performance across grade levels to ensure consistent growth and rigor
Coordinate humanities initiatives across both campuses to ensure consistent expectations and implementation
Manage curriculum resources, planning timelines, and key deliverables throughout the year
Work closely with school leaders to ensure that curriculum plans translate into strong classroom practice
