Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college or university; at least 7 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively with providers, suppliers, and Distributors on behalf of Johnstone Supply.
  • Extensive knowledge of transportation operations i.e., parcel, LTL, TL, multi modal, private fleet, logistics brokers, carrier negotiations, LTL pricing benchmarks (tariffs), and transportation management systems.
  • Project management skills: establish objectives, timelines, and deadlines; action planning to meet deadlines; evaluating current and future positions.
  • Problem-solving skills: listening to, interpreting, and meeting the needs of others; diagnosing and rectifying problems.
  • Knowledge of financial operations (i.e., cost of operations, return on investment, budgets). Ability to prepare budgets and operate a logistics function as a profit center.
  • Knowledge of governmental regulations as applies to product distribution, including OSHA regulations, FMCSA, Worker’s Compensation, HAZMAT handling, DOT, FAA and NAFTA regulations,
  • Knowledge of product transportation methods, alternative solutions, and options.
  • Knowledge of Human Resource Management principles, including hiring, orienting, training, coaching, and evaluating employees.

Responsibilities

  • The Director is passionate about all aspects of the customer experience interacting with the Distribution network. Set high standards of customer service, quality, efficiency, and productivity for the Transportation function and use metrics to have visibility and drive continuous improvement in all areas of transportation operations.
  • Promote a safe work environment for all employees and external parties by fostering a strong culture of safety. Implement new practices and behaviors that build upon that culture. Creates KPIs and uses them to drive continuous improvement in transportation processes and practices.
  • Seek to continuously improve customer experience, service levels, quality, and operational efficiencies by understanding customer needs, and thinking strategically to develop solutions to reach best in class transportation operations.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state and federal laws and regulations regarding transportation and shipping.
  • Set performance expectations for the team, use key performance measures, and oversee the activities of the Transportation team and external transportation partners to achieve goals and objectives and enhance the customer experience.
  • Execute business strategies and plans. Use project management and change management skills and methodology to lead change in the operations.
  • Define and fulfill financial objectives by developing annual operating and capital expenditure transportation budgets, monitoring performance to budget, and manages results.
  • Ensure that transportation agreements and service levels meet the needs of the Company at a competitive price by actively managing the relationship with third party transportation partners. Negotiates contracts for transportation and other third-party logistics services to deliver service, quality and cost controls.
  • Develop and execute plans to provide new, effective and efficient ways to move product across multiple tiers of the supply chain, from suppliers to customers and job sites.
