Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) and a minimum of 10 years of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have at least two years of supervisory experience.
  • 10 + years of commercial P&C underwriting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven expertise in Mid-Market or Large Accounts underwriting across multiple lines (Property, GL, Auto, WC, Umbrella).
  • Background using data analysis to guide underwriting philosophy and decisions
  • Candidate will possess excellent communication (verbal/written), organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-starting, self-motivating and capable of making decisions independently.
  • Valid driver’s license is required
  • Travel may be necessary

  • Insurance-related designation(s) preferred (AU, ARM and/or CPCU).

Responsibilities

  • Directly responsible for the supervision, training and development of commercial lines staff to ensure that Profit Center business goals and objectives are successfully achieved.
  • Supervise underwriting staff. Hire, train and mentor underwriters and underwriter team leaders. Conduct performance and salary reviews.
  • Conduct quality reviews. Assist Home office quality review team as needed.
  • Assign underwriters to agencies, and assign staff to underwriting teams.
  • Act as referral source for all underwriters. Refer as required to branch manager/home office.
  • Monitor unit performance in regard to growth, loss ratio and pricing. Take corrective action as needed.
  • Maintain positive agency relationships through agency visitations to articulate Acadia Insurance Company underwriting philosophy and to resolve Agency underwriting issues.
  • Contributes to Acadia's success by developing departmental and individual staff goals; measuring results, rewarding achievements or taking corrective action, as necessary.
  • Develops employees through coaching, training, providing ongoing and constructive feedback, and through regular performance and salary reviews.
  • Retains staff by managing responsibly and creating a positive work environment.
  • Keeps abreast of industry developments, particularly those which impact his or her area(s) of responsibility.
  • Understands Acadia's business and the factors that affect its success.
  • Communicates regularly and effectively with staff, both as a team and individually.
  • Other duties as assigned.
