About The Position

As the Distribution Engineering Portfolio Manager, you will own and evolve the nationwide distribution engineering capability, playing a critical role in the growth and maturation of Black & Veatch’s distribution business during a period of rapid expansion. This position extends beyond traditional engineering management and is focused on building, scaling, and maturing the technical organization, infrastructure, and leadership model required to support increasing client demand across the United States. In this role, you will own the technical vision and execution approach for distribution engineering and partner closely with the Distribution Grid Leader to support and enable the overall distribution strategy, delivery models, and long term growth objectives. The role requires a leader who can build sustainable engineering infrastructure, develop talent, and leverage enterprise resources while maintaining clear accountability for engineering execution and quality.This position is intended for a senior engineering leader who thrives in fast growth environments and is motivated by building and scaling engineering organizations in close collaboration with business leadership. In this role, you will have the opportunity to: Lead and scale a nationwide distribution engineering organization supporting clients across the United States Own the technical vision and execution strategy for distribution engineering, aligned with and enabling the broader distribution business strategy Serve as the Portfolio Manager counterpart to the Distribution Grid Leader, jointly shaping how distribution engineering capabilities evolve to support future growth Partner closely with Project Management leadership to align engineering execution, resourcing, and delivery outcomes Partners with the Distribution Grid Leader to influence key P&L outcomes by driving utilization, cost efficiency, and sustainable growth across the national distribution portfolio. Establish and sustain consistent engineering quality, standards, and best practices across distribution projects and programs The TeamBlack & Veatch’s Technology, Commercial & Industrial group supports clients across fast‑growing, technology‑driven markets, including advanced manufacturing, generative AI computing, data centers, gigafactories, bio/ag tech, and distributed infrastructure. The Distribution Engineering Portfolio Manager works closely with distribution grid leadership, project delivery teams, and enterprise functional partners to align engineering capability with market demand, while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, and professional development

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • 15+ years of progressive experience in electrical distribution engineering and project delivery
  • Extensive experience leading electrical distribution engineering teams supporting investor‑owned utilities on a national or regional basis
  • Proven track record of building and scaling engineering organizations, including environments that evolve into teams of several hundred or more professionals through organic growth and/or acquisitions
  • Prior experience in a senior engineering, technical or organizational leadership role in complex, multi-location environments
  • Demonstrated success establishing organizational infrastructure, governance, and standardized engineering practices in fast‑growth environments
  • Brings a strong background in design services and EPC organizations, with prior exposure to P&L related responsibilities
  • Deep technical expertise in electrical distribution systems, including line design, structural engineering, pole loading, transformer loading and the delivery of large‑scale, utility distribution programs across the full project lifecycle.
  • Experience leading through multiple layers of leadership, including Directors and Engineering Managers
  • Strong executive‑level communication and client engagement skills
  • Experience supporting proposals, developing large‑scale engineering estimates, and participating in strategic pursuits
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license with NCEES Record
  • Language fluency: English / Spanish a plus

Responsibilities

  • Own and lead the distribution engineering function at a national level, ensuring consistent application of engineering standards, quality practices, and technical rigor
  • Act as the primary decision‑maker for distribution engineering delivery models, technical standards, and organizational structure, in alignment with distribution business strategy and enterprise objectives
  • Translate distribution strategy into executable engineering approaches, workforce plans, and capability roadmaps
  • Design and implement scalable organizational structures and leadership layers to support continued growth
  • Build and mature scalable systems and processes for staffing, workload management, quality assurance, training, and performance management
  • Drive expansion of the distribution engineering organization through strategic hiring, onboarding, mentoring, and development of new talent
  • Ensure engineering tools, standards, and delivery methodologies evolve alongside organizational growth
  • Support the integration of future acquisitions by aligning engineering practices and governance models
  • Partner closely with the Distribution Grid Leader leadership to align engineering execution with business objectives and delivery commitments
  • Share responsibility for engineering‑related financial performance, including utilization, forecasting, and cost management
  • Monitor performance trends and proactively adjust engineering strategy to support margin, efficiency, and growth goals
  • Provide senior‑level oversight of distribution engineering programs and portfolios delivered across the United States
  • Serve as a technical and organizational escalation point for complex engineering, resourcing, or delivery challenges
  • Ensure effective coordination across disciplines, project teams, and enterprise stakeholders
  • Support business development efforts including proposals, pursuit strategies, and engineering estimates for distribution programs
  • Participate in strategic client engagements as a senior engineering leader, representing distribution engineering capabilities
  • Lead through a growing leadership team of Directors, Engineering Managers, and senior technical staff, building leadership bench strength and succession plans
  • Collaborate with enterprise engineering and grid organizations to effectively leverage shared technical resources while continuing to grow dedicated distribution engineering capability
