About The Position

Performs skilled o highly skilled transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records, ordering of signs and materials, and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Requirements

  • None in formal education
  • District Sign Tech II: 1 year in sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
  • District Sign Tech III: 2 years in sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
  • Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "N" endorsement at time of application.
  • Considerable knowledge of: The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Traffic Control Standard Sheets, The Sign Crew Field Book, Inventory/stock control procedures
  • Proficient skill in: Using basic mathematical fundamentals, Installing and repairing signs, Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems, Safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment, Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Some skill in: Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates and expenses
  • Extensive knowledge of: The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, The Sign Crew Field Book, The Guide to Proper Location and Installation of Signs and Other Devices
  • Considerable knowledge of: Traffic Control Standard Sheets, Standard Highway Sign Designs for Texas
  • Expert skill in: Safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment
  • Proficient skill in: Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates and expenses, Using basic mathematical fundamentals
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Orders supplies and materials from district shop.
  • Conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs).
  • Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs.
  • Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions.
  • Measures and calculates amount of materials needed.
  • Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other items related to these duties.
  • Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs
  • Performs and maintains inventory of signs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on sign truck.
  • Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other departmental guidance.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • May assist in scheduling and assigning work.
  • May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications
  • Trains other technicians on sign installation and safety procedures.
  • Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
  • Maintains expense records and inventory of materials. supplies and equipment.
  • Orders supplies and materials from district shop
